The launch timeline is now history

Explora Journeys took delivery of EXPLORA III from Fincantieri on 23 July 2026. The ship was named in Barcelona on 1 August and departed on her maiden voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon on 3 August.

What is genuinely new onboard?

More ship, without a dramatic increase in guests

EXPLORA III is 19.2 metres longer than her sisters while carrying, in Explora Journeys’ own words, a similar number of guests. Suite and guest counts circulating for the ship (around 463 suites and roughly 920 guests) are not stated in the press material we reviewed. Check and verify with the cruise line. Explora Journeys describes the ship’s 19.5 square metres of public space per guest as the most generous ratio in the fleet.

Explora Journeys confirms two 315-square-metre Owner's Residences and an expanded allocation of Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences. A category-by-category split has been reported — roughly 313 Ocean Suites, 109 Ocean Penthouses and 39 Ocean Residences — but is not published in the releases we reviewed, so treat it as indicative. Check and verify with the cruise line. The direction of travel is clear either way: the extra length shifted the mix upmarket rather than simply adding beds.

The practical implication is straightforward: the ship has more room to distribute guests across lounges, restaurants, outdoor decks and wellness spaces.

Do not mistake that for a guarantee of empty venues. Space-per-guest is a useful design metric, but it does not tell you whether the main restaurant feels busy at 7 p.m. or whether the most popular lounge has an available table after sunset.

The first LNG-powered ship in the fleet

EXPLORA III is the first LNG-powered vessel in Explora Journeys’ fleet. She also has shore-power capability, allowing the ship to connect to local electricity infrastructure where available.

That represents an emissions improvement, particularly in port. Explora Journeys’ materials credit the ship's LNG dual-fuel technology with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 per cent compared with conventional marine fuel. It is not a complete environmental solution. LNG remains a fossil fuel, and its overall impact depends on fuel sourcing, methane management, ship operation and the availability of cleaner alternatives.

Treat the technology as a step, not a finish line.

New culinary concepts

EXPLORA III introduces three new culinary or hospitality concepts:

The Cellar, focused on wine discovery.
The Chef’s Table, built around a more personalized dining experience.
Shore Club on 11, adding another social and dining space.

The familiar Explora Journeys restaurant lineup remains part of the onboard framework. The change is less about replacing the brand’s identity and more about adding additional reasons to spread your time across the ship.

For value-minded travelers, the question is not simply whether a venue is new. Ask whether the experience is included in your fare, whether reservations are required, and whether special menus or premium beverages carry an additional charge.

Expanded suite mix and wellness facilities

The ship introduces:

A second Owner’s Residence.
An expanded collection of Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences.
Reimagined Ocean Wellness facilities combining spa and fitness.
Open-air fitness space.
An extended running track.
Additional sports-court options, including pickleball, paddle and basketball.

The key distinction is that EXPLORA III is not introducing a radically different accommodation philosophy. Explora Journeys remains an all-suite brand. The change is scale, variety and a larger allocation of higher-category suites.

EXPLORA III is also not an adults-only ship. The official ship description includes the Nautilus Club for children and teens. If a child-free environment is essential to your trip, do not infer it from the brand’s luxury positioning. Confirm the specific ship and sailing environment before you pay.

The inaugural-season route is the real headline

Explora Journeys designed EXPLORA III’s first season around a continuous northern arc rather than a series of repeated loops.

The ship moves through Northern Europe, Iceland and Greenland before continuing toward Canada, New England and North America. Longer stays and selected overnight calls are intended to support a slower, more destination-focused style of travel.

That matters because the itinerary may be the strongest value proposition on the ship. You are not only buying a suite and onboard inclusions. You are buying access to a route that combines Nordic cities, fjords, remote Arctic landscapes and North American coastal destinations in one extended sequence.

The tradeoff is logistical complexity. Northern itineraries require more careful planning around weather, transfers, air connections and shore conditions. Accessible travelers should request written confirmation of tender arrangements, gangway procedures, accessible transfers and excursion vehicle specifications rather than relying on a general accessibility statement.

The Caribbean deployment: read the current version

EXPLORA III makes its Caribbean regional debut departing Québec City on 15 October 2026 and arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 1 November 2026.

The season includes destinations such as:

Saint Barthélemy.
Saint Lucia.
The British Virgin Islands.
Western Caribbean ports.
Central American destinations.

EXPLORA I begins Caribbean sailings from Miami on 17 November 2026 after a transatlantic crossing.

Explora Journeys describes the Caribbean programme as running from late October 2026 through March 2027, with EXPLORA III working the Caribbean and Central America out of San Juan and Miami, with 15 November 2026 (San Juan to Miami, seven nights) and 20 December

2026 (Miami to San Juan, eight nights, calling at Ocho Rios, Jost Van Dyke and St Maarten) among the published departures. The 15 October 2026 Québec City departure, the 1 November 2026 San Juan arrival and EXPLORA I's 17 November 2026 Miami start are all stated in Explora Journeys' Caribbean season announcement. In May 2027 the ship transits the Panama Canal to the Pacific coast of Central and North America. One important correction: EXPLORA II is deployed to the Mediterranean and Arabian Peninsula for winter 2026–27, not the Caribbean. Several older articles still place EXPLORA II in the Caribbean, so check the operator’s current itinerary before relying on a comparison article.

The 2027–28 reset changes the booking conversation

On 21 August 2026, Explora Journeys cancelled its winter 2027–28 Middle East and Red Sea programme because of regional security concerns. Affected guests received automatic full refunds plus a €250 future-cruise credit per person, capped at two guests per booking, with replacement schedules opening for sale on 9 September 2026. The revised structure is:

EXPLORA I: A new South America programme of 10 voyages between December 2027 and March 2028.
EXPLORA V: Mediterranean and Atlantic Islands.
EXPLORA II and EXPLORA IV: Caribbean.
EXPLORA III: Asia. Revised-deployment reporting places EXPLORA III in Asia for winter 2027–28, alongside the Caribbean programme held by EXPLORA II and EXPLORA IV.

EXPLORA I operates 10 voyages in South America between December 2027 and March 2028 across 37 destinations including 20 maiden ports — Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, the Falkland Islands and Chile — with five overnight stays and eight late departures. EXPLORA V operates 21 voyages from December 2027 to April 2028, starting in the Western and Central Mediterranean and North Africa, moving to the Atlantic Islands in January and returning to the Mediterranean in March, with overnight stays planned in Casablanca and Lisbon and a maiden call at Crotone.

A brand-new hull brings inaugural-season wrinkles. Crew members are settling into their roles, service pacing may vary, and first-visit port calls can expose gaps between a brochure and the actual shore day.

The public-space-per-guest statistic is a marketing metric, not a measurement of how crowded a restaurant feels during the evening rush.

The August 2026 programme cancellation also shows how quickly luxury cruise deployment can move. A full refund and travel credit may soften the financial impact, but they do not restore the original itinerary, vacation timing or pre-cruise arrangements.

LNG is an emissions improvement, not a solution to cruise emissions.

Finally, EXPLORA III is larger than the ships that established Explora Journeys’ intimacy-focused identity. More space can improve comfort, but a bigger ship can also create tension with the promise of a small-yacht atmosphere. That tension is worth naming before you book.
