The winter 2027-28 Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula program has been canceled. Explora Journeys withdrew it on 21 August 2026, citing the evolving regional security situation. Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain are off the winter map, and with them Petra, Luxor, the Pyramids of Giza and AlUla.
EXPLORA V now stays in the Mediterranean for the full season. EXPLORA I — originally paired with her in the Gulf — has been redeployed to South America. Booked guests received automatic cancellations, full refunds and a €250 future-cruise credit, and replacement itineraries opened for booking on 9 September 2026. The line says the region remains of interest; no return date has been given, and you should not plan around one.
That matters because this collection was announced a year ago and most of the coverage you will find was written before the cancellation. The rest of the season is intact and genuinely significant: close to 100 journeys across 59 countries and nearly 200 destinations, with a first Asia season and a new ship. But two of the three headline deployments have moved since the announcement, and one of them no longer exists.
EXPLORA V is not the Asia ship
The other thing the headlines invite you to get wrong. "Asia debut and EXPLORA V" describes two separate deployments announced together, not one. EXPLORA III operates the Asia season. EXPLORA V debuts in December 2027 in the Mediterranean.

The Asia season, and what a maiden call is not
EXPLORA III runs 28 journeys to 47 destinations across Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Explora identifies every destination as a maiden call for the brand.
A maiden call is an operational milestone, not a promise of insider access. It means the line has not been there before — new local vendors, new transfer patterns, new berth arrangements, unfamiliar timing between the port and the thing you actually want to see. The destination itself is not new, undiscovered, or exempt from a normal cruise day. First seasons improve quickly. They also involve adjustments while they do.
The overnights are the real feature
Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Naha, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh City and Bali. An overnight changes the shape of a port visit — an evening meal, a performance, a second-day excursion that a daytime call cannot hold, and an end to treating each place as a timed scavenger hunt.
It does not mean twenty-four hours in the city center. Check the actual arrival and departure times, whether the ship stays alongside or shifts to anchor, the distance from berth to the attraction, whether immigration or local transport restricts the evening, and the second-day all-aboard. In Ha Long Bay and Bali especially, geography can eat the whole advantage: a longer stay still leaves a substantial transfer between the ship and the experience.
Seasonal timing cuts both ways
The collection is timed around autumn foliage in Kyoto, cherry blossom at Shimizu and Nagoya, Golden Week in Shanghai, and Chinese New Year on board in January 2028. That is real atmosphere — and the same dates raise demand for hotels, rail, restaurants, guides and ground transport. A port day inside a major holiday is culturally richer and operationally busier at once, and bloom timing in particular is a forecast rather than a schedule.
EXPLORA V, and what "quiet season" actually means
Her inaugural Mediterranean program runs 27 destinations across nine countries, with a maiden call at Salerno, an overnight in Istanbul and New Year's Eve in Naples. The maiden voyage is the 4 December 2027 Rome to Istanbul sailing. An Atlantic Islands collection adds a maiden call at Crotone, late departures at Salerno, Livorno, Palma, Kotor and Ibiza, and overnights in Casablanca and Lisbon, plus Tenerife, the Canaries and Madeira.
A Mediterranean winter gives you cooler air, softer light and manageable museums and archaeological sites. It also gives you shorter daylight, cooler evenings, rain and wind, seasonal closures and reduced hours, rougher sea days, and outdoor venues on a different schedule. "Quiet season" describes the rhythm, not the forecast.
Adults-oriented is not adults-only
Worth being exact about, because most of what we cover is genuinely adults-only and a reader could reasonably assume this is too. Explora Journeys is adults-oriented in positioning and is not adults only. The brand publishes a dedicated multigenerational family program. If a child-free environment is the requirement rather than the preference, this is not the line that guarantees it — and if you are traveling as a family, that same fact makes the collection more relevant, not less.
For a multigenerational booking, confirm the age rules, whether the suite configuration actually suits the group, which family programming exists on your specific ship and sailing, how excursions handle different mobility levels and attention spans, and whether the itinerary leaves downtime between heavy port days. A group trip works better when "together" does not mean "everyone does everything".
Where the case is weaker
Asia is not automatically easy because a luxury brand is selling it — long transfers, language, port congestion, visa rules and regional holidays all still shape the day. Two days in port do not mean two full days of touring, and overnights encourage overplanning. A new ship can be finished in hardware while its routines and shore operations are still maturing. And a headline itinerary hides the total cost: airfare, visas, hotels, transfers, insurance and destination experiences remain separate questions.
