Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 refit:
what changes in 2027

Thirty-one new staterooms, refreshed Grills and bigger kennels arrive in May 2027. None of it is a reason to assume a better fare, and the post-refit cabins are already on sale.

Queen Mary 2 is getting 31 new staterooms and a dry-dock refit in spring 2027 — announced, not finished, and none of it guarantees you a better fare.

Sources and facts checked: October 7, 2026 (America/New_York). Fares, suite benefits, refit scope and booking dates change without notice. Check and verify with the cruise line before you pay.

Cunard announced the refurbishment on September 9, 2026. The work will take place at Damen Shiprepair Brest in France. The ship is scheduled to enter dry dock on March 31, 2027 and return to service on May 9, 2027.

Those are announced dry-dock dates, not proof that every related sailing or calendar detail is final. Do not assume a specific voyage is canceled or altered unless Cunard confirms it directly.

The project is intended to refine QM2 rather than replace her identity. Cunard says the work will preserve the ship's distinctive Art Deco character while updating accommodations, wellness, retail, outdoor space, pet facilities and entertainment technology.

It is also being framed as a long-term capital decision rather than a cosmetic refresh. On Carnival Corporation’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, chief executive Josh Weinstein said the investment is designed to ensure the ship “continues to generate attractive returns for decades to come.” That is the corporate framing, and it matters to how you read the announcement: this is investment in an asset the line intends to keep earning from, not a farewell tour.

Cunard's new post-refit suites and staterooms went on sale on May 18, 2026 for voyages departing from May 2027. The dates are settled; availability, inventory and final layouts are not, so confirm them for your voyage.

More inventory is not better value

The headline accommodation change is the addition of Princess Grill Suites and Britannia-category staterooms. That creates more inventory, but it does not automatically mean better value.

A new stateroom can be attractive if you want:

  • A post-refit cabin rather than an older finish
  • Access to a category that was previously sold out
  • A better chance of booking a preferred voyage
  • A refreshed premium experience without moving to the top suite category

However, Cunard’s announcement does not establish the final price, exact location, square footage, accessibility specifications, or noise profile of every new room. Treat those details as open questions until the final deck plans and booking record are available.

Do not assume that every Britannia stateroom is priced for one guest. Cunard’s solo-traveler information describes single staterooms on Queen Mary 2, including Britannia Inside and Britannia Oceanview options. It also says solo fares appear after selecting the stateroom grade and guest count.

That supports the existence of solo-focused inventory, but it does not establish a fixed supplement or a guaranteed post-refit cabin assignment. Compare the live one-person total against a standard cabin booked alone. Do not rely on a percentage quoted elsewhere.

The solo gap across the Cunard fleet

Queen Mary 2 is not the whole picture. Cunard's fleet does not treat solo travelers uniformly.

Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth each have purpose-built single cabins offered at a fixed solo rate. Queen Anne does not, and no refit is scheduled to add single cabins to Queen Anne — solo guests on Queen Anne pay a single supplement. If the QM2 refit is what prompted you to look at Cunard, check which ship your voyage is actually on before assuming the solo pricing structure carries over.

One discrepancy to flag rather than resolve. Secondary sources give Queen Anne's 2027 South America Discovery voyage as both 82 nights and 90 nights, with the departure listed as January 10, 2027 from Southampton. Both figures are cited here rather than one being chosen, because the conflict could not be settled between the sources reviewed. Confirm against Cunard's published voyage pages, and reference the voyage codes, which are the reliable identifier.

How to evaluate the post-refit product

Use the refit announcement as a scope document, not as a finished-product review.

Check the actual cabin record

Before paying, confirm:

  • The exact stateroom category
  • Whether the cabin is new or refreshed
  • The location on the final deck plan
  • The view, balcony, bathroom configuration, and accessible features
  • Whether the fare is calculated for one guest or double occupancy
  • Whether the cabin can be held, changed, or repriced under the selected fare

For solo travelers, compare three totals:

  1. A dedicated or single stateroom, if available
  2. A standard Britannia cabin with the applicable single supplement
  3. A higher category if the price difference is reasonable

Cunard has not published a universal fixed solo supplement for every QM2 voyage. Require the live booking record or written confirmation before treating any solo figure as reliable.

Ask what the fare does not guarantee

The refurbishment announcement does not guarantee:

  • A specific restaurant table
  • A particular spa appointment
  • A quiet cabin location
  • A pet-facility booking
  • A connecting or adjacent cabin arrangement
  • A fully accessible bathroom
  • Any particular entertainment schedule
  • A specific excursion or shore experience

For accessible travelers, ask Cunard to confirm the cabin’s measurements, bathroom layout, thresholds, route to public spaces, embarkation assistance, and any tender limitations. Do not infer accessibility from the words “refreshed” or “spa-inspired.”

For multigenerational groups, ask whether the final cabin plan supports the proximity, connectingroom, dining, and mobility arrangements your group needs. A larger inventory does not automatically create a workable family configuration.

For pet travelers, confirm kennel availability, the owners’ lounge rules, walking-area access, documentation, and any revised capacity or booking procedures directly with Cunard.

Booking timing: book now or wait?

Book earlier when cabin location, solo inventory, accessibility, pet space, or adjoining rooms matter most. Waiting may provide better information about the finished product, but it can reduce choice.

The practical middle ground is to:

  • Identify the exact post-refit voyage
  • Price the cabin for the correct number of guests
  • Confirm whether the itinerary is scheduled after the planned return to service on May 9, 2027
  • Ask whether the deck plan is final or provisional
  • Review deposit, cancellation, and change terms
  • Recheck the booking before making nonrefundable air or hotel arrangements

Do not book solely because a new-suite announcement sounds exclusive — book when the cabin, fare rules, and post-refit timing work for your actual trip.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Refreshed Grill Suites and bathrooms
  • More Princess Grill and Britannia inventory
  • Expanded outdoor space
  • Updated Mareel Wellness & Beauty facilities
  • Improved kennel and dog-walking facilities
  • New luxury retail spaces
  • Illuminations digital upgrade
  • Continued Art Deco design direction rather than a full identity change

Cons

  • The work is announced, not completed
  • Exact deck-level changes may evolve
  • New inventory does not guarantee solo pricing
  • Accessibility details remain cabin-specific
  • Pet capacity and procedures require direct confirmation
  • Refurbishment announcements do not establish final fares or inclusions
  • A post-refit sailing may still carry operational changes related to the dry dock

Devil’s advocate: is newer automatically better?

Not necessarily.

The strongest reason to choose a post-refit sailing may be access to a refreshed cabin or a specific new suite — but a newer room does not automatically beat a well-located existing one, and location, motion, noise, bathroom design, elevator proximity, and fare flexibility can matter more than the age of the furnishings.

The ship may also feel busier if added capacity sells strongly. Expanded outdoor space can help, but new staterooms may change traffic patterns and the balance between accommodation and public areas.

Treat “refined” as a design intention, not a guarantee of value — judge the finished product against the final cabin record, deck plan, fare conditions, and onboard operation.

Verify before you pay

Book earlier when cabin location, solo inventory, accessibility, pet space, or adjoining rooms matter — and get every detail above in writing before paying.

Obtain written confirmation of:

  • The exact sailing and whether it is scheduled after May 9, 2027
  • The cabin category, location, and final deck-plan status
  • The one-person total and any single supplement
  • Taxes, fees, deposits, final-payment deadline, and cancellation rules
  • Whether the cabin is new, refreshed, or unchanged
  • Accessibility features and required medical or mobility requests
  • Connecting or nearby cabin arrangements for multigenerational groups
  • Kennel availability and pet-travel requirements
  • Spa, dining, retail, and entertainment details that matter to your decision
  • Any schedule or itinerary changes connected with the dry dock

Which QM2 voyage are you actually pricing?

Confirm the ship, the post-refit timing, and the solo fare on the live booking record — then decide whether the refit changes your choice at all.

Frequently asked

When will Queen Mary 2 enter dry dock?

Cunard has announced March 31, 2027 at Damen Shiprepair Brest. Confirm the live schedule before booking.

When is QM2 expected to return to service?

Cunard has announced May 9, 2027. This is a planned return date, not a guarantee that every calendar listing is final.

How many new rooms are being added?

Cunard has announced 31 new staterooms: 16 Princess Grill Suites and 15 Britannia-category staterooms.

Does the refit guarantee better solo value?

No. Cunard’s solo page confirms single-stateroom options, but live pricing and any supplement depend on the voyage, category, inventory, and fare rules.

Are the kennels being changed?

Yes. Cunard says the kennels will be redesigned, with increased capacity, a refreshed owners’ lounge, and an expanded outdoor dog-walking area. Confirm availability and procedures directly with Cunard.

Are all accessibility details known?

No. The announcement confirms refreshed bathrooms in Grill Suites but does not provide every cabin’s final accessibility specification. Request cabin-specific written confirmation.
