Flying with a
portable oxygen concentrator

There is one federal framework and six airlines interpreting it differently. Conflating those is how people arrive at a gate with the wrong answer.

You have to match your exact device and battery setup to the FAA framework, then to the operating carrier's current procedure — and those are two different tests with two different answers. This article covers the logistics only. Whether you can fly, at what flow rate, and for how long are clinical questions for your own physician.

Start with what the FAA framework actually does

The FAA acceptance criteria require that a POC:

  • Be legally marketed in the United States under applicable FDA requirements.
  • Not contain hazardous materials beyond what the rules permit.
  • Meet the applicable operating and labeling conditions.
  • Carry the manufacturer’s red FAA-conformance label where required.

Check your exact make and model against that. Do not rely on a generic product description or the phrase "FAA approved" in marketing copy — it is not a certification and it tells you nothing about your flight.

FAA acceptance is not any of these things

  • Airline approval to bring or use the device on your specific flight.
  • Approval of your battery quantity or watt-hour rating.
  • A guarantee of a particular seat, or of in-seat power.
  • Clearance for a codeshare, regional or interline segment operated by someone else.

The FAA's Advisory Circular 120-95A is guidance for operators, passengers and manufacturers. It is the floor the airlines build on, not a substitute for asking them.

One more federal point worth knowing before you plan anything: a POC and compressed or liquid oxygen are treated completely differently. FAA PackSafe guidance on compressed or liquid oxygen states that passengers may not carry their own compressed or liquid oxygen in checked baggage, carry-on baggage or on their person in the United States, while its separate guidance on portable oxygen concentrators covers the devices this article is about. Several carriers also state plainly that they do not provide in-flight medical oxygen. The working assumption is that you bring a qualifying POC, or you do not fly with oxygen.

Six carriers, six procedures

How major U.S. carriers publish their POC requirements, as stated on their own materials and checked September 12, 2026. Carrier-specific and subject to change — confirm with the airline actually operating your flight.

Official POC requirements, by airline

The table summarizes each carrier's own page. Read the page itself before you book — the summary is a starting point, not a substitute.

United also publishes a POC Physician Consent Form (PDF) that must be completed and signed by your physician and carried on the trip. The published version is dated May 2023 — confirm with United that it is still current before your physician completes it.

Note the pattern rather than memorizing the cells: every carrier wants advance notice, most want a multiple of your flight time in battery, none of them wants the device in an exit row, and almost none will let you plug it in. Where a carrier publishes an accepted-device list, check your model against that list rather than a copy of it — including copies in articles like this one, which is why none is reproduced here.

Batteries are the part that gets people turned away

  • Spare lithium batteries must travel in carry-on baggage, never checked.
  • Terminals must be protected against short circuit and physical damage.
  • FAA guidance generally allows lithium-ion batteries up to 100 watt-hours without special airline approval.
  • Up to two spare batteries above 100 watt-hours are generally permitted with airline approval.
  • Several carriers require capacity covering 150% of expected travel time — confirm yours.

On the 150% figure. Southwest, American and Delta each publish it, calculated slightly differently. Treat it as a carrier requirement rather than one universal federal rule, confirm your airline's calculation, and add the delay you have not planned for.

Plan the entire journey on batteries — taxi, ground holds, connections and the walk between gates included. Delta states batteries may not be charged in flight, Breeze's contract says it does not permit POC hookup to aircraft power, and JetBlue says medical devices should not rely on in-seat power. Any power you do find is a bonus, never part of the arithmetic.

The airport sequence

  1. Arrive early enough for a counter conversation, not just a kiosk check-in.
  2. Have the device, its label and your batteries accessible rather than packed.
  3. Expect an agent to verify the model, battery count and packaging.
  4. Expect a gate check of operation, alarms and charge before boarding.
  5. Know which phases of flight you are cleared to use it in.
  6. Confirm the stowage position — under the seat in front, in almost every case.

Where a carrier issues an approval document, bring it and keep it reachable rather than buried — Delta's process, for example, asks travelers to bring the approval statement to the gate and meet the agent before departure, and states that each separate reservation needs its own approval. A gate agent with a document in front of them is a two-minute conversation; one without is a much longer one.

If the flight connects to a cruise

Treat the flight and the cruise as separate arrangements. An airline's approval covers the flight only; the cruise line has its own oxygen process, equipment rules and deadline. Devil's advocate

The failure mode here is almost never a hostile airline. It is a traveler who checked one layer — the FAA criteria, or the marketing phrase, or what worked last year — and stopped. Each carrier publishes a different notice period, a different battery calculation and a different seating rule, and a codeshare segment can put you under a carrier you never researched.

The other quiet risk is a tight connection. A layover that normally works does not when an agent needs to inspect a device and count batteries at the gate — book longer connections.

Verify before you fly

  1. Check your exact make and model against the FAA acceptance criteria — not a marketing phrase.
  2. Contact each operating carrier separately, including codeshare and regional segments.
  3. Confirm the notice period each carrier requires, and put the request in inside it.
  4. Calculate battery capacity against the carrier’s stated multiple of travel time, plus ground delays.
  5. Confirm watt-hour ratings and how many spares you may carry.
  6. Pack all batteries in carry-on with terminals protected.
  7. Ask which seats are unavailable to you, and book accordingly.
  8. Confirm whether in-seat power may be used — usually it may not.
  9. Ask what documentation, if any, the carrier may request.
  10. Reconfirm 48 hours before departure, and keep the approval accessible at the gate.

Is "FAA approved" on a product page good enough?

No. Check your exact make and model against the FAA acceptance criteria, then again against your airline’s own accepted-device list. Those are two separate approvals, and marketing copy is neither.

Does FAA acceptance mean the airline will let me use it?

No. FAA acceptance is not airline approval for your flight, not approval of your battery quantity or watt-hour rating, not a seat guarantee, and not clearance for a codeshare, regional or interline segment flown by a different carrier. How many batteries do I need?

Can I carry my own oxygen cylinder instead?

Generally no. A POC and compressed or liquid oxygen are treated completely differently: FAA PackSafe guidance states that passengers may not carry their own compressed or liquid oxygen in checked baggage, carry-on baggage or on their person in the United States. Do not assume any airline supplies cabin oxygen.

Do I need a doctor’s form?

It depends on the carrier.
