Know your terminal, use your assigned arrival time and plan the night before around Miami traffic, not wishful thinking.
Sources and facts checked: October 24, 2026 (America/New_York). Terminal assignments, entrance routing, parking rates, shuttle programs and race-day closures change. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor before you travel.
PortMiami’s 2026–2027 high season includes 81 days when seven to 10 ships call, according to Miami-Dade County’s October 16 traffic release. That makes your terminal and arrival window core planning facts, not fine print.
Arriving early is not the cautious choice
Arrive only at the embarkation time assigned by your cruise line. An early arrival will not get you onboard sooner; it adds curbside congestion and leaves you waiting with bags and nowhere to sit. Check your latest cruise documents before setting out, and do not put "PortMiami" into navigation and assume it will pick the right route.
The entrance is split by terminal: use the PortMiami Tunnel for Terminals AA, A, B, C and D; use the PortMiami Bridge for E, F, J and V. The county’s list still puts Terminal G in the bridge group, but Terminal G is closed for reconstruction. Rideshares and motor carriers stage via the tunnel. Taxis split too: Terminal C area via tunnel and Lot 1, Terminal E area via bridge and Lot 2. We walk through the new arrival plan in PortMiami just changed how you arrive.
The county backs this with traffic personnel, cargo roadways as alternate routes and a GridMatrix congestion-monitoring pilot (computer vision, a Miami-Dade Innovation Authority Public Innovation Challenge winner). Useful tools, but they do not replace checking your terminal and route.
Your terminal determines the entrance
Use the table as a reference, then check your current cruise documents; assignments can change by sailing. Terminals sit on Dodge Island, most addresses along North Cruise Boulevard.
| Terminal | Cruise line, per the county | Entrance |
|---|---|---|
| AA | MSC Cruises | Tunnel |
| A | Royal Caribbean | Tunnel |
| B | Norwegian Cruise Line | Tunnel |
| C | Several cruise lines | Tunnel |
| D | Carnival Cruise Line | Tunnel |
| E | Carnival Cruise Line | Bridge |
| F | Carnival Cruise Line | Bridge |
| J | Smaller and luxury ships | Bridge |
| V | Virgin Voyages | Bridge |
| G | Royal Caribbean; closed for reconstruction | Confirm reassignment with your cruise line |
The line names come from the county’s cruise terminals page; lines share and swap terminals by sailing, and Royal Caribbean’s own PortMiami directions page lists Terminals A, AA and E for its ships. If you sail with a line not named here, your cruise documents are the only reliable source.
PortMiami counted its 10 millionth cruise passenger of fiscal 2026 on September 14, according to Cruise Industry News’ report on the 10 millionth passenger. Ports count every embarkation and disembarkation, so that is passenger movements rather than individual travelers, and The Maritime Executive’s coverage of the milestone says the total puts PortMiami back ahead of Port Canaveral as the world’s busiest cruise homeport. On the busiest days, a terminal-specific plan beats a generic estimate.
Share the terminal and arrival appointment with your group before departure day, and save driver instructions where you can reach them without a signal.
Terminal G means confirm, do not guess
Terminal G is closed for reconstruction: demolition began in 2025, the $345 million replacement broke ground in January 2026 and completion is targeted for late 2027, according to Cruise Industry News’ Terminal G groundbreaking report.
If your documents still show Terminal G, expect a reassignment. Royal Caribbean’s directions page currently lists Terminals A, AA and E for its ships and warns that the terminal can change. Ask your cruise line to confirm the new terminal and entrance in writing, and do not navigate to Terminal G itself.
Staying nearby beats crossing the causeway on sailing morning
Stay downtown or in Brickell the night before. These hotels are a drive or taxi ride from the terminal, not a walk-with-luggage option; a short map distance can hide a long, exposed pedestrian route.
- Downtown, closest to the port: Hilton Miami Downtown, which says the port is within a 10-minute drive.
- Brickell mid-tier: Hampton Inn & Suites Miami/Brickell-Downtown, Novotel Miami Brickell, Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami.
- Luxury: Four Seasons Hotel Miami, InterContinental Miami (100 Chopin Plaza, roughly 2 miles), EAST Miami.
Multigenerational groups: confirm room configurations and vehicle capacity before booking. If you need accessibility-conscious planning, ask the hotel in writing about room features, entrance route and transfer vehicle. Miami Beach can suit a longer stay but adds a causeway crossing on a high-traffic morning.
Choose the airport and parking plan before you leave home
Miami International Airport (MIA): about 7 miles, roughly 20-30 minutes by car. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL): about 26 miles, roughly 35-50 minutes. Palm Beach International (PBI): about 70 miles, roughly 70-90 minutes.
The MIA and FLL distances come from the port’s cruise FAQ; the drive times are planning estimates. Traffic, road work and your terminal can change the trip.
Airport-transfer pilots are limited to select dates: a county pilot with Carnival was set to begin complimentary MIA shuttle transfers for Carnival Celebration passengers in October 2026, and Royal Caribbean’s complimentary airport shuttle for Icon of the Seas passengers continues. The county has not published dates or pickup points; confirm eligibility and timing with your cruise line before relying on either.
Port parking is priced per garage, and the county’s parking page publishes the current rates: $28 per vehicle per day for overnight parking at Garages C, D, F and G and Surface Lot E, with oversized vehicles at Surface Lot E charged $25 per space per day; $35 per vehicle per day for overnight parking at Garage AA (MSC) and Garage B (Norwegian). Garage A (Royal Caribbean) is priced separately, and the county page sends you to Royal Caribbean’s own rate page.
The difference is material for a week-long sailing: seven days at $35 instead of $28 is $49. Match the garage to your assigned terminal before you drive, and check the county's parking page for the rate at the time of your sailing.
Practical order: drop passengers and luggage at the terminal first, then park; porters handle dropped-off luggage, so keep documents, medication and valuables with you.
A day on either side of the sailing needs one main plan
PortMiami sits on Dodge Island, so every off-port activity requires the bridge or tunnel exit. Pick one area per day and leave room for the ride back.
Before your cruise: Brickell food halls, Wynwood Walls (about 15 minutes by car), Pérez Art Museum Miami (about 10 minutes), South Beach (about 20 minutes) or Everglades airboat tours (about 45 minutes). After the cruise the list runs in reverse, but account for luggage, disembarkation and airport timing first.
Check each operator's location, duration, cancellation terms and accessibility details before paying.
Marathon Sunday changes the usual Miami plan
The Life Time Miami Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2027, with a 6 a.m. start and rolling closures through 2 p.m. Biscayne, Brickell and Coconut Grove streets are affected; the organizer’s traffic advisory lists the MacArthur Causeway eastbound closed 5-8:10 a.m., the Venetian Causeway westbound 6:20-10 a.m., the Rickenbacker Causeway 6:40-11:50 a.m. and Coconut Grove segments from 6:50 a.m. to as late as about 1:20 p.m. PortMiami stays open via NE 5th Street, and the advisory recommends the Julia Tuttle Causeway for Miami Beach access from 6 to 10 a.m. If your sailing, hotel or transfer falls that weekend, check the full advisory and confirm your route and pickup timing in writing; do not assume a shuttle, rideshare or regular downtown route operates as usual.
Devil's advocate: a careful plan cannot remove every delay
A correct terminal, hotel night and arrival time reduce avoidable confusion. They cannot remove traffic, a delayed flight or a changed terminal assignment. The shuttle pilots run on select dates with unpublished pickup points, so do not build the day around one. Keep a backup transfer option.
Verify before you pay

Frequently asked
Which entrance should I use for PortMiami?
Tunnel for AA, A, B, C or D; bridge for E, F, J or V. Terminal G is closed. Verify your sailing’s assignment before setting out.
What if my cruise documents still say Terminal G?
Ask your cruise line for the reassigned terminal and entrance in writing. Do not navigate to the closed facility.
Should I stay in Miami Beach before my cruise?
You can, but you will cross a causeway to reach the port. Downtown or Brickell is more practical for a sailing morning, especially on a high-traffic date.
What does PortMiami parking cost per day?
The county’s parking page lists $28 per vehicle per day for overnight parking at Garages C, D, F and G and Surface Lot E, and $35 per vehicle per day at Garage AA (MSC) and Garage B (Norwegian). Garage A (Royal Caribbean) is priced separately through Royal Caribbean. Verify the rate for your assigned terminal before you drive.
Are the airport shuttles available for every departure?
No. The county describes select-date pilots without published dates or pickup points. Confirm directly with your cruise line.
Can I fit an Everglades tour into a pre-cruise day?
Possibly: the drive is about 45 minutes each way before tour time and traffic. Confirm the schedule in writing and do not risk a tight embarkation window.
What changes on marathon Sunday?
Closures roll through downtown, Brickell, the causeways and Coconut Grove. PortMiami stays open via NE 5th Street. Check the official advisory and confirm your provider’s route.
