Royal Caribbean put its fourth Icon Class ship in the water this month and started cutting steel on the fifth — while the promotion getting the most attention may not apply where you live.
Sources and facts checked: September 30, 2026 (America/New_York). Ship specifications, debut dates, itineraries, promotions and port suspensions change. Promotional terms differ by market. Check and verify with the cruise line before you pay.

Hero of the Seas moves from steel to outfitting
Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas reached a major construction milestone at Meyer Turku in early September, reported on September 8. More than 90 million gallons of water flooded the dry dock overnight, allowing the ship to move to an outfitting pier, where it will continue to take shape over the next year. Hero is reported at approximately 250,800 gross tons.
That distinction matters. A float-out does not mean the ship is ready for passengers. Interior work, technical installation, testing, crew preparation, and sea trials still come before delivery.
Hero is the fourth Icon Class ship, following:
- Icon of the Seas, in service from 2024
- Star of the Seas, in service from 2025
- Legend of the Seas, in service from 2026
Hero is scheduled to take over Icon of the Seas’ current Miami role in August 2027. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for August 11, 2027, a 3-night sailing to Perfect Day at CocoCay. Icon will move to Galveston, Texas, where it is expected to operate Western Caribbean itineraries.
Royal Caribbean’s published plans position Hero for year-round seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages from Miami. Announced port examples include:
- Perfect Day at CocoCay
- Cozumel
- Philipsburg, St. Maarten
- San Juan
The exact port order and availability will vary by sailing. Treat itinerary pages as current planning information, not a permanent promise.

What makes Hero different?
Royal Caribbean is keeping the basic Icon Class architecture while giving Hero its own identity.
New Orleans dining
Hero’s supper club will use a New Orleans theme, a change from the concepts associated with its sisters:
- Icon of the Seas: New York
- Star of the Seas: Chicago
- Legend of the Seas: Hollywood
- Hero of the Seas: New Orleans
The Orleans Parish Supper Club is expected to combine Cajun and Creole influences with live jazz and a more theatrical specialty-dining format.
The first three-deck Ultimate Treehouse Suite
Hero will introduce the fleet’s first three-deck Ultimate Treehouse Suite, with a rooftop terrace, private whirlpool, and a dedicated teen space. It is designed for large family groups, with distinct areas intended to separate children, teens, and adults more effectively than a conventional family suite.
That may appeal to multi-generational travelers who want proximity without forcing every generation into the same room. It will also be an expensive product, so compare the total suite cost against booking several standard cabins nearby.
A larger adults-only Hideaway
The adults-only Hideaway retreat will be revitalized and expanded. Royal Caribbean says Hero will feature the largest swim-up bar at sea.
The ship will also add:
- A new Coconut Cove pool
- Two new family raft slides
- Nine pools overall
- Additional entertainment and dining concepts
Hero is still a family-focused ship, not an adults-only vessel. Solo travelers, LGBTQ+ groups, and child-free couples may find quieter spaces onboard, but they should not confuse an adults-only neighborhood with an adults-only cruise environment.
And yes, Hero will have a Chief Dog Officer. Her name is Dolly. Royal Caribbean has said she joins Rover on Icon, Sailor on Star, and Skipper on Legend as the line’s fourth Chief Dog Officer. Some reporting also said Dolly’s name was chosen partly as a tribute to Dolly Parton, who passed away in August 2026.
Icon 5: construction begins, details do not
On September 14, Royal Caribbean marked the keel-laying of its fifth Icon Class ship at Meyer Turku.
The ceremony placed the first major steel block into dry dock. Coins were placed beneath the block as part of the traditional maritime good-luck ritual.
The ship remains officially unnamed. Royal Caribbean has not published its final onboard features, homeport, itineraries, or detailed accommodation plan. It is currently expected to launch in 2028.
That means the responsible headline is simple: Icon 5 is under construction, but there is not yet enough public information to compare it meaningfully with Hero.
Do not treat speculative names, leaked deck plans, or guessed deployment as confirmed information.

Royal Caribbean’s two big-ship classes
For practical comparison, separate the current fleet into these two groups.
| Class | Ships |
|---|---|
| Icon Class | Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, Legend of the Seas |
| Oasis Class | Oasis of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas |
Hero is the next Icon Class addition, while Icon 5 is the following ship under construction.
Icon Class generally emphasizes a neighborhood-based layout, large-scale family attractions, extensive pools, and multiple dining and entertainment zones. Oasis Class remains known for its split-level neighborhood design, Central Park and Boardwalk concepts, and a broad range of onboard activities.
For a solo traveler or smaller group, the newest ship is not automatically the best value. A slightly older Oasis Class ship may offer a lower fare while preserving the big-ship experience. Compare cabin price, port schedule, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, transfers, and onboard spending before deciding.
September 2026 promotion context
Royal Caribbean’s September promotion language is largely UK-facing. The headline offers include:
| Promotion | Published context |
|---|---|
| Kids Sail from £99 | Select UK sailings; additional guest age and cabin rules apply |
| 3rd and 4th guests from £99 | Select UK sailings and new bookings |
| Early Booking Bonus | $50 onboard credit on qualifying bookings |
| Taxes and fees | Additional charges may apply, including for promotional guests |
The two £99 offers are open to bookings made September 15 to October 5, 2026, and the Early Booking Bonus to bookings confirmed May 1 to December 31, 2026 on sailings departing nine months or more out. Check the current terms before you rely on either.
The UK terms state that the £99 amount refers to cruise fare and that taxes, fees, and port expenses apply to all guests. The offer is capacity-controlled and may exclude dates, ships, or sailing types.
The $50 onboard credit is not cash. It is cruise-only, non-transferable, and can expire if unused. The published terms also state that it may be removed after certain booking changes.
Most importantly: do not assume a UK promotion applies to a US booking. Check the market, currency, residency requirement, sailing eligibility, guest composition, and whether the offer survives a later fare change.

Labadee remains paused
Labadee is not central to Hero’s launch story, but it remains relevant when comparing Royal Caribbean itineraries.
Royal Caribbean’s pause on Labadee calls continues through June 2027. Replacement ports vary by ship and sailing. Possible substitutions include Perfect Day at CocoCay, Cozumel, Grand Turk, Dominican Republic ports, Falmouth, Grand Cayman, Bimini, or an additional sea day.
The practical money point is easy to miss:
- Labadee excursions and cabanas are refunded when canceled.
- The cruise fare is not automatically refunded or reduced because Labadee is removed.
- A replacement port may create new excursion, transport, or accessibility costs.
Read OTGG’s existing Labadee suspension and repricing guide before relying on an older itinerary.

Devil’s Advocate: is newer always better?
No.
Hero will offer the newest design, new attractions, and the novelty of a first-season sailing. It may also bring:
- Higher launch-season pricing
- Crowded public areas
- Limited passenger feedback
- Unfinished expectations around new venues
- Premium pricing for suites and specialty experiences
- Port changes that affect the advertised itinerary
A multi-generational family may value the three-deck suite and family slides. A solo traveler may prefer a less expensive ship with a stronger social program or better single pricing. An LGBTQ+ group may care more about cabin clustering, entertainment timing, port logistics, and inclusive group coordination than whether the ship has the newest slide.
Choose the ship that solves your travel problem. Do not pay a premium merely to be first.
Verify before you pay
- Confirm the ship, sailing date, homeport, and itinerary on the live Royal Caribbean booking page.
- Confirm whether the promotion is UK-only, US-eligible, or restricted to another market.
- Confirm the total price after taxes, fees, deposits, gratuities, and selected extras.
- Ask whether promotional benefits remain attached after a cabin change, fare change, or name change.
- For solo bookings, compare the dedicated price for one guest with standard double-occupancy pricing.
- For groups, confirm cabin proximity, dining arrangements, accessibility needs, and cancellation terms in writing.
- If an itinerary changed, compare the original confirmation with the current invoice.
- Obtain written confirmation from Royal Caribbean or an accredited travel advisor before paying a non-refundable deposit.
- Recheck ship features, port calls, fares, promotions and deposit schedules before final payment.
