Two cruise-line changes have made package timing matter: one sharpens a fixed-price deadline; the other introduces sailing-specific prices.
Sources and facts checked: October 22, 2026 (America/New_York). Package prices, cutoffs and service charges change, and Carnival’s dynamic prices will be set sailing by sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor before you pay.
The old shortcut, “buy before you board”, is no longer enough. Princess still publishes set package rates, but its four-day cutoff makes the deadline important. Carnival has said it will move drinks and Wi-Fi packages to sailing-specific pricing from December 1, 2026, without publishing a future rate card.
Fixed prices reward avoiding the deadline
Princess Plus and Premier rates increased by $5 per person, per day for voyages departing on or after October 13, 2026, according to Cruise Hive’s report on the Princess package increase. Princess’s current package page lists pre-cruise rates of $70 per person, per day for Plus and $105 for Premier on most ships; Sun Princess and Star Princess are listed at $75 and $110. The onboard rates are $5 higher on each. Treat these as a fare snapshot, checked on October 18, 2026 — not a promise that rates will remain the same.
For the lower pre-cruise rate, Princess says the package must be purchased at least four days, or 96 hours, before departure. Purchases within that window or onboard incur an additional $5 per person, per day. Check the official Princess package page and terms and conditions for your sailing. For the full change, see Princess packages cost more from October 13.
Practical timing: If you have decided the package fits your needs and the price shown is acceptable, purchasing before the cutoff avoids the late-purchase increase. Do not leave the decision until the final days and assume you can still get the same rate.
The $5 increase adds $35 per person over a seven-day sailing. That is worth recalculating, especially for solo travelers and light drinkers: the package price changed, but your drinking habits, and the individual drink prices, may not have.
Dynamic pricing makes monitoring more useful than guessing
Carnival announced on October 14, 2026 that it will introduce dynamic pricing for beverage packages and Wi-Fi plans beginning December 1, 2026, with prices that, according to Travel Market Report’s coverage of the announcement, “will vary based on sailing length, itinerary, and season.” Carnival did not publish a new rate table, a price range or a full pricing formula.
The current-rate baseline, before the change takes effect: Carnival’s drink packages page lists CHEERS! at $69.95 per person, per day pre-cruise and $74.95 per person, per day onboard, each plus a 20% service charge. That brings the effective rate to about $83.94 per day bought before you sail and $89.94 per day bought onboard. CHEERS! Zero Proof is listed from $29.99 per person, per day, and Carnival says the 20% service charge applies to all drink package purchases. Wi-Fi plans were reported in Cruise Hive’s coverage of the December 1 change at $20.40, $23.80 and $25.50 per person, per day (Social, Value and Premium) when bought online before sailing, with a Premium multi-device plan from about $90 per day for up to four devices. Treat these as a dated snapshot checked October 18, 2026 — they are the numbers against which any post-December dynamic price should be compared. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor.
There was also a time-limited path to the old-style certainty. Alongside the dynamic-pricing announcement, Carnival introduced FunPacks — bundles priced at $50 per person, per day (Zero Proof), $60 (Social) and $99 (Epic), plus a $25 Kidstarter for ages 3 to 17 — which could be booked through My Cruise Manager from October 14 through October 30, 2026 for sailings departing October 31, 2026 through December 31, 2027. Travel Market Report reported that beverage-package service charges are included in the FunPack price. If you booked a FunPack in that window, keep the confirmation. If you did not, ask Carnival whether the offer has been extended or reopened for your sailing before you plan around it. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor.
That changes the timing question. There may not be one dependable “cheapest week” to buy across all sailings. Instead, check the package price when you book, then revisit it periodically, for example, around 90, 60 and 30 days before departure and again a week out, if those dates apply to your planning window.
If you see a price you are comfortable paying, compare it with your budget and the package terms before purchasing. A later price could be higher, or lower. No public information reviewed for this article establishes how frequently prices will update or whether the model applies to packages already attached to existing bookings, although Carnival’s drink packages page says price adjustments, up or down, are implemented on the day of sailing and replace any previously advertised price. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor.
Do not assume the old onboard-price difference will continue under the new system. Verify the price and purchase terms for your specific sailing before paying.
Use the right timing rule for the right model
| Pricing model | When to check | Practical move |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed price, like Princess’s current published model | When you book and before the 96-hour cutoff | Decide early if the package works for you. Avoid leaving the purchase until the cutoff window. |
| Dynamic price, as announced for Carnival from December 1, 2026 | At booking, then at regular intervals before departure | Record the displayed price, compare later quotes, and consider purchasing when the price fits your budget. Do not assume it will fall. |
| Either model | Before payment and after any booking change | Recheck package terms, eligibility, price, and cancellation or repricing conditions. |
These are planning steps, not predictions about when a cruise line will set its lowest price.
For the arithmetic, not the timing question, see the existing cruise beverage-package break-even guide. Recalculate using the price currently shown for your sailing. Princess’s increase means a solo traveler or light drinker needs to meet a higher package cost with the same personal consumption.
The honest counter-case: variable prices could move down
Dynamic pricing is not automatically bad for travelers. A lower-demand sailing could, in principle, have a lower price than a fixed-rate alternative. But that is a possibility, not a confirmed Carnival promise. The future pricing range, and whether a particular traveler’s price can decrease, have not been made clear in the reporting reviewed.
Community discussion on cruise forums has included anxiety about “surge pricing,” as well as the counterpoint that variable prices could fall. Those reactions are traveler sentiment, not evidence of how the pricing model will work.
The larger concern is uncertainty: a fixed rate lets you make a decision against a known price. A variable rate requires you to track changes while the company’s formula remains undisclosed. If you do not want another item to monitor, that inconvenience is part of the decision too.

Sailing Princess? When is the purchase cutoff?
For Princess, confirm the scheduled departure time and calculate the 96-hour cutoff. Check whether any package restrictions apply to your booking.
Sailing Carnival from December 1? Is the pricing answer in writing?
For Carnival sailings from December 1, 2026, ask whether dynamic pricing applies to your booking and sailing date. Get the answer in writing.
Booked a Carnival FunPack? What does it include?
If you booked a Carnival FunPack between October 14 and October 30, 2026, confirm in writing what the bundle includes and that it is attached to your specific sailing.
Buying before December 1? Have you asked about a rate lock?
Ask whether buying before December 1 locks a rate, and whether the new system applies to packages already attached to bookings. The reporting reviewed does not settle these points.
Can the package be changed if the price moves?
Check whether a purchased package can be canceled, repriced or changed if the displayed price later moves.
What is your break-even at the current price?
Recalculate break-even using your expected drinks and the package’s current price. Do not use an old article’s price as a quote.
Does a package match your actual habits?
Compare a package against your actual habits, including port days and days spent ashore.
Frequently asked
When is the cheapest time to buy a Princess package now?
Princess’s lower pre-cruise rate requires purchase at least 96 hours before departure. Buying earlier avoids the stated late-purchase increase, but does not establish that the price will be the lowest possible for every booking. Check the current rate and terms for your sailing.
Does Carnival’s dynamic pricing apply to my existing booking?
The reporting reviewed does not clearly answer that, and Carnival has not published the detail. Ask Carnival about your booking and get written confirmation before relying on a rate.
Is there a way to lock Carnival’s current fixed price?
Carnival’s FunPack bundles (Zero Proof $50, Social $60 and Epic $99 per person, per day) were bookable from October 14 through October 30, 2026 for sailings departing October 31, 2026 through December 31, 2027, as a fixed-price option ahead of the December change. If you missed that window, ask Carnival whether a fixed-price option is still available for your sailing, and confirm the contents and eligibility in writing.
Will other cruise lines adopt dynamic pricing?
That is unknown. The current changes show two different approaches, Princess’s published rates with a deadline and Carnival’s sailing-specific pricing, not proof that other lines will follow.
Is a package still worth it after Princess’s increase?
Redo your break-even calculation with the current rate and your expected consumption. A $5-per-day increase raises the cost; whether it changes your decision depends on what you would otherwise spend.
Can a dynamic package price go down?
Carnival’s drink packages page says price adjustments can be up or down, but the information reviewed does not confirm that prices will fall for any specific sailing. Monitor the price if you are comfortable waiting, and do not treat a future drop as a sure thing.
What happens if I wait until onboard?
For Princess, the published terms say purchases within 96 hours of departure or onboard incur an additional $5 per person, per day. For Carnival, the current onboard CHEERS! rate is $5 per day above the pre-cruise rate, but onboard pricing under the dynamic model from December 1, 2026 has not been published. Confirm the applicable rate before you wait.
