Beverage package
break-even math

A drinks package pays off at a number of drinks per day, not a feeling. Here is how to find your number — and why the all-guests rule can decide it for you.

## The basic cruise beverage break-even formula

Sources and facts checked: October 4, 2026 (America/New_York). Package prices, inclusions, gratuity treatment and the all-guests rule change by line and sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line before you pay.

Do not start with “How many drinks do I need every day?” Start with the total cost.

Use this formula:

Break-even cost per paid drink = (package price + gratuity) ÷ expected paid drinks

For a daily package:

Break-even drinks per day = total package cost, including gratuity ÷ voyage days ÷ expected drink price

Use your own likely drink mix. Count alcoholic drinks, mocktails, specialty coffee, bottled water, smoothies, and other beverages you would otherwise purchase. Do not count drinks already included in the fare.

The result is not a universal recommendation. It is a decision point. If your expected à-la-carte spending is lower than the package’s effective cost, skip the package.

All live package prices in this article are. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Royal Caribbean: unlimited, but not automatically economical

Royal Caribbean’s Deluxe Beverage Package is described by the line as unlimited, and its official FAQ confirms there is no daily drink limit. The package is personal and cannot be shared. Royal Caribbean also states that an 18% gratuity is generally added to the package price. 18% gratuity fig- ure:. Check and verify against Royal Caribbean’s live gratuity policy page.

As of 16 September 2026, Royal Caribbean’s current position restores an accommodation route through a Beverage Package Accommodation Request for the same-stateroom purchase rule. The qualifying categories are medical condition, disability, and pregnancy. When that request is approved, the affected guest must still purchase the Refreshment Package instead of the Deluxe package. Royal Caribbean also states that guests who submit abusive, false, or misleading information can

be charged retroactively for the full alcohol package for the entire cruise and may face further enforcement. **Same-stateroom rule and accommodation-request process:. Check and verify with the cruise line. and written confirmation.

Read the Royal Caribbean beverage-package FAQ, the same-stateroom Deluxe package rule FAQ, and the line’s gratuity policy.

Royal Caribbean formula

Use:

(displayed package price × 1.18) ÷ expected paid drinks

For example, if two adults in one stateroom are required to purchase the package, calculate the total for both guests. Do not compare one person’s expected drinks against two people’s package cost.

Include drinks you would genuinely order, such as:

  • Cocktails, beer, and wine by the glass
  • Mocktails
  • Bottled water
  • Eligible specialty coffee and tea
  • Smoothies or milkshakes where included

Do not assume every coffee venue participates. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ specifically says Starbucks purchases are excluded from the Deluxe Beverage Package.

The Royal Caribbean traps

  • A port day can destroy the math if you spend most of the day ashore.
  • A non-drinking adult may still trigger the same-stateroom purchase rule unless Royal Caribbean approves a Beverage Package Accommodation Request for a qualifying medical condition, disability, or pregnancy. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • A solo traveler avoids the shared-cabin issue but still needs enough personal consumption to reach break-even.
  • “Unlimited” describes access, not value. A package can be unlimited and still be financially unnecessary.

Celebrity: Classic and Premium have serving ceilings

Celebrity’s Classic Drink Package and Premium Drink Package both use serving-value ceilings. According to Celebrity's published beverage-package FAQ, the current standard U.S.-market ceilings are $12 for Classic and $19 for Premium.

Higher ceilings — reported as $14 for Classic and $23 for Premium — have circulated for UK and Australia sailings. Celebrity’s beverage-package FAQ we reviewed does not publish a regional table, so treat those figures as unconfirmed. Check and verify with the cruise line. Use the threshold published for your booking market and sailing rather than assuming one set of figures applies globally.

Celebrity states that a 20% gratuity is added to drink-package purchases. The packages are personal, cannot be shared, and allow one drink at a time. Celebrity also states that all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom must purchase the same package, subject to stated exceptions that require verification.

If a drink exceeds the applicable package ceiling, Celebrity says the guest pays the difference. Its official examples also apply a 20% gratuity to that difference.

Celebrity formula

Use:

(displayed package price × 1.20 + expected premium-difference charges) ÷ expected paid drinks

Run the calculation separately for Classic and Premium.

If most of your choices fall below Celebrity’s currently published Classic ceiling, Premium may add expense without adding enough practical value. If your preferred wine, cocktail, spirit, or specialty coffee regularly exceeds the Classic ceiling, calculate the actual difference instead of assuming an upgrade is cheaper. Use $12 for Classic and $19 for Premium, the ceilings Celebrity publishes. If you are booked in the UK or Australia, ask Celebrity for the ceiling that applies to your market rather than assuming the US figures — or the reported higher ones — apply.

The Celebrity traps

  • Do not assume a published ceiling from an older program year still applies; verify Celebrity’s live menu, booking market, and current package terms before using any break-even math.
  • One drink at a time matters when ordering for a partner or group.
  • Specialty coffee may improve the Premium calculation, but only if you would buy it anyway.
  • A same-stateroom rule can make a package decision a household calculation rather than an individual one.

Virgin Voyages: calculate the Bar Tab, not a package

Virgin Voyages does not use a traditional unlimited alcoholic beverage package. Its fare includes essential drinks such as still and sparkling water, non-pressed juices, soda, tea, and drip coffee. Premium drinks are purchased separately.

Virgin promotes a Bar Tab, which is prepaid onboard credit for beverages. The official Virgin Voyages drinks page states that the Bar Tab can be used for alcoholic drinks, specialty coffee, fresh-pressed

juices, smoothies, mocktails, and other premium beverages, and that tips are included in the listed drink prices.

Virgin also states that a Bar Tab is not required for every Sailor in a cabin and can be used to pur- chase drinks for another person. That makes it structurally different from Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

The Bar Tab is non-refundable once the voyage starts, and Virgin states that it is available for pur- chase through 24 hours before sailing.

Virgin’s current Bar Tab bonus or promotional structure appears to be active on the live official site as of this review, but **all bonus amounts, tiers, and promo mechanics remain. Check and verify with the cruise line. Confirm that any advertised bonus or promotional structure is still active for your specific sailing before you rely on it — if it has lapsed, the Bar Tab is prepaid credit at face value only.

Virgin formula

Use:

Expected premium-drink spending − any valid Bar Tab bonus or credit = estimated outof-pocket beverage cost

Then compare that estimate with the amount you plan to prepay.

Do not load a Bar Tab simply because a live bonus is advertised. First confirm that the promotion is still active for your sailing. Then calculate whether you would use the full balance during the voyage. A non-refundable balance is not a saving if it remains unused.

The Virgin traps

  • Essential drinks are already included, so count only premium beverages.
  • A Bar Tab can cover coffee and mocktails, not only alcohol.
  • Tips are included, so do not add an 18% or 20% gratuity unless the current terms specifically require it.
  • Solo travelers can use a Bar Tab for their own drinks without paying for a cabin mate’s package.
  • Group travelers can share the spending flexibility, but that also makes overconsumption of the balance easier.

Port days, non-drinkers, and group math

Port days

Count your actual onboard drinking opportunities, not simply the number of nights. A long excursion, an accessible shore day with limited venue access, or a day spent away from the ship may reduce your consumption substantially.

For a seven-night voyage with three full port days ashore, build a low, medium, and high estimate rather than assuming seven identical days.

Non-drinkers

For Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, a non-drinking adult in the same stateroom may affect the calculation because of the same-stateroom purchase rule. For Royal Caribbean, ask the line to confirm whether a Beverage Package Accommodation Request applies for a qualifying medical condition, disability, or pregnancy before paying. Same-stateroom rule and accommodation-request process:. Check and verify with the cruise line.

For Virgin, each traveler can decide independently whether to purchase a Bar Tab.

Solo travelers

A solo traveler has the cleanest calculation:

Your expected beverage spending ÷ your expected paid drinks

Do not borrow a drinking partner’s assumptions. Count what you drink, including premium coffee and mocktails, and exclude included beverages.

Groups and multigenerational families

Use a person-by-person spreadsheet. A teenager, abstaining adult, coffee drinker, cocktail enthusiast, and occasional wine drinker should not be modeled as one average guest.

A group can still choose different strategies when the line permits it. Where a same-stateroom rule applies, however, the group may have fewer choices than expected.

Devil’s Advocate: when the package still wins

Break-even math is not the whole decision.

A package may be worthwhile even when the arithmetic is close if you value:

  • Predictable onboard spending
  • Trying premium beverages without checking every receipt
  • Mocktails, coffee, water, and smoothies throughout the day
  • Convenience during sea days
  • A group’s shared social rhythm

The opposite is also true. A mathematically favorable package may be a poor choice if it encourages drinking more than you intended, creates pressure to “get your money’s worth,” or remains active during days when you are ashore.

Value is not permission to consume. It is a planning tool.

Verify before you pay

  • Record the displayed package or Bar Tab price for your exact sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • Confirm whether gratuity is included or added separately. For Royal Caribbean, verify the current 18% gratuity figure against the live gratuity policy page before payment. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • Calculate the total for every required adult in the stateroom. If Royal Caribbean’s same-stateroom rule applies, confirm the current Beverage Package Accommodation Request process in writing before payment. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • For Royal Caribbean, confirm whether a Beverage Package Accommodation Request applies for a qualifying medical condition, disability, or pregnancy, and get the result in writing. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • For Celebrity, verify same-stateroom package rules and any exception process in writing before payment.
  • Check Celebrity’s current serving ceilings and the cost of drinks above those ceilings. Use $12 Classic and $19 Premium, and ask Celebrity in writing which ceiling applies to your booking market and itinerary.
  • Count port days, excursion days, and time spent ashore.
  • Include mocktails, specialty coffee, bottled water, smoothies, and fresh juices only if you would actually purchase them.
  • Confirm whether your preferred venues and beverages are eligible.
  • For Virgin, calculate whether a Bar Tab will be fully used.
  • Confirm the Bar Tab’s non-refundable terms and purchase deadline in writing. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • Save written confirmation from the relevant cruise line, not just a sales banner or social-media post.

Frequently asked

Does Royal Caribbean have a daily drink limit?

The official FAQ says there is no daily limit for the Deluxe Beverage Package. The package remains personal and non-shareable.

Does Celebrity include drinks above the package ceiling?

Celebrity applies serving-value ceilings by package. The published ceilings are $12 for Classic and $19 for Premium. Higher ceilings are reported for UK and Australia sailings but are not in the FAQ we reviewed — confirm the figure for your market. Drinks above the applicable ceiling may create a charge for the difference.

Is Virgin’s Bar Tab an unlimited drink package?

No. It is prepaid credit for premium beverages. Essential drinks are included in the fare, and tips are included in listed drink prices.

Is a beverage package worthwhile for a non-drinker?

Usually, do not assume so. Calculate mocktails, specialty coffee, bottled water, and other eligible beverages separately. On Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, first verify the same-stateroom rules.

Can a Virgin Bar Tab pay for another person’s drink?

Virgin’s official drinks page states that it can be used for another person’s premium drink. Confirm current terms before purchase.
