Onboard credit
is not cash

Two bookings can both promise $200 onboard credit and be worth very different amounts. Refundability, expiry and what it may be spent on decide the difference.

A cruise promotion advertising “$300 onboard credit” sounds like $300 back in your pocket.

Sources and facts checked: September 18, 2026 (America/New_York). Onboard credit rules, refundability and expiry vary by booking, promotion and brand, and change without notice. Check and verify with the cruise line before you rely on it.

It is not.

Onboard credit, or OBC, is usually a restricted spending balance. Its value depends on the cruise line, the source of the credit, the booking terms, and what you purchase. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are related brands, but you should not assume their OBC rules work identically.

The safest rule is simple: identify the type of credit before you count it as part of your travel budget.

Promotional versus purchased OBC

OTGG planning summary. Checked September 18, 2026.

Promotional or complimentary OBC A booking incentive, compensation offer, or included benefitUsually noIt may expire unused
Purchased OBC Credit you bought or funded with your own moneyDepends on the line and termsRefundability must be confirmed
Explicitly refundable OBC Credit whose terms specifically state that unused funds will be returnedYes, subject to termsThe refund method and timing may vary

Do not rely on the dollar figure alone. Look for the exact label: promotional, complimentary, pur- chased, refundable, non-refundable, or compensation OBC.

How Royal Caribbean promotional OBC works

Royal Caribbean’s Global Purchase Terms and Conditions state that Promotional OBC may be redeemed through Plan My Cruise or another accepted channel.

That can make the credit useful before embarkation. Depending on the booking and available products, you may be able to apply it toward eligible amenities such as excursions, dining, beverages, or other cruise add-ons. It does not turn the credit into a reduction of your cruise fare.

Royal Caribbean booking changes can affect the credit

Royal Caribbean states that changes to a cruise booking may invalidate or reduce Promotional OBC entitlement. Treat a cabin change, sailing change, reprice, cancellation and rebooking, or itinerary adjustment as a reason to recheck the credit.

Do not assume that a promotional benefit follows the reservation unchanged.

Royal Caribbean currency conversion matters

Royal Caribbean states that Promotional OBC is priced in U.S. dollars and automatically converted into the local currency of the cruise booking. The local-currency value can fluctuate until you use the credit to book an amenity. Once an amenity booking is made, the exchange rate is fixed for later purchases if residual credit remains.

That means a “$300 OBC” headline may not display as exactly 300 units of your onboard currency. It is a credit amount subject to the booking currency and the timing of use.

What happens to unused Royal Caribbean promotional OBC?

Royal Caribbean’s Global Purchase Terms and Conditions state that any unused Promotional OBC at the date of sailing transfers for use onboard but expires at 10 p.m. on the final night of sailing (Royal Caribbean Global Purchase Terms and Conditions, Promotional Onboard Credit section), and cannot be exchanged for cash or refunded.

The important distinction is that Royal Caribbean’s published Promotional OBC language does not automatically establish the treatment of every other OBC category. If your account shows purchased, compensation, or refundable credit, obtain the specific terms in writing.

How Celebrity onboard credit works

Celebrity’s official Ways to Spend Onboard Credit page describes OBC as usable toward many purchases across the ship.

Celebrity lists eligible examples including:

  • Shore excursions
  • Specialty dining
  • Beverages
  • Shopping
  • Spa treatments
  • Photography
  • Wi-Fi
  • Certain fitness classes and onboard experiences

Celebrity also states that OBC cannot be used for:

  • Medical costs for treatment onboard
  • A deposit for a future cruise
  • Any part of the cruise fare, including the All Included package

Celebrity does allow OBC for some separate pre-cruise purchases, such as full beverage or Wi-Fi packages, according to its official FAQ. Verify the specific purchase in your account before assuming the credit will apply.

Celebrity complimentary and purchased OBC are different

Celebrity specifically distinguishes between complimentary and purchased OBC:

  • Complimentary OBC is non-refundable.
  • Purchased OBC is refundable to the guest prior to leaving the ship.

Celebrity also states that OBC has no cash value, cannot be redeemed for cash, and that guests must use their credits by 10 p.m. on the last evening of the cruise; unused credits are those not used by that time (Celebrity Cruises, Ways to Spend Onboard Credit — expiration/use section).

One older Celebrity Australia-market source states that OBC expires at midnight on the last night rather than 10 p.m. That appears to be a legacy or regional variant. Use 10 p.m. as the primary working figure because it is the most current and most consistently published across Celebrity’s live pages, but confirm the applicable cutoff for your specific market and booking.

Celebrity’s page says additional OBC posted after the original ticket purchase may appear in the onboard account within 24 hours of embarkation (Celebrity Cruises, Ways to Spend Onboard Credit — posting window section). Check and verify with the cruise line. — this posting window was not independently re-verified in the latest pass. Do not panic if a credit is not visible immediately, but do confirm its status with Guest Relations if it does not appear after the stated window.

Why a $300 headline is not $300 cash

Consider two different examples.

Example one: $300 promotional OBC

You receive $300 in Royal Caribbean Promotional OBC. You may be able to use it through Plan My Cruise before sailing or onboard for accepted amenities. You cannot request $300 in cash. A booking

change could reduce or remove the benefit. Any unused promotional balance expires at the stated cutoff.

Example two: $300 purchased OBC on Celebrity

You purchase $300 in Celebrity OBC. Celebrity identifies purchased OBC as refundable, subject to current terms. If you do not spend the entire amount, the unused balance may be returned according to the line’s process. That does not mean you can treat it as unrestricted cash during the cruise or apply it to every charge.

The source of the credit changes the outcome.

Do not assume rules transfer between sister brands

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are related brands, but neither brand’s published OBC rules on the pages cited here state any reciprocal onboard-credit treatment between the two. In plain English: a Celebrity OBC rule should not be assumed to apply to a Royal Caribbean booking, and a Royal Caribbean OBC rule should not be assumed to apply to a Celebrity booking.

Treat each booking under that brand’s own published terms and get any exception in writing.

A practical OBC spend-down sequence

Use this order before you spend anything:

  1. Read the credit description. Record whether each balance is promotional, complimentary, purchased, refundable, or compensation-related.
  2. Use restricted credit first. Apply non-refundable promotional or complimentary OBC to purchases you already planned, such as a suitable excursion, specialty meal, Wi-Fi package, or spa appointment.
  3. Check eligibility before purchasing. A product being visible in the cruise app does not automatically mean every OBC type can pay for it.
  4. Watch the currency display. On Royal Caribbean, compare the original promotional amount with the converted onboard amount before confirming an amenity purchase.
  5. Keep refundable credit separate when possible. If Celebrity identifies part of your balance as purchased and refundable, do not deliberately spend it first unless you prefer the purchase to a possible refund.
  6. Ask for a written balance explanation. Request an account statement showing the remaining promotional, complimentary, and refundable amounts before the final evening.
  7. Do not wait for the cutoff. Use eligible non-refundable credit before 10 p.m. on the final night. Shops, spas, restaurants, and Guest Relations may be busy or unavailable.

Devil’s Advocate: is OBC still valuable?

Yes, but only when it matches spending you would have made anyway.

Promotional OBC can be useful if you already planned to book an excursion, specialty dining, or Wi- Fi. It is less valuable when it pressures you into buying an overpriced item simply to avoid forfeiting the balance.

For multigenerational groups, confirm whether the credit is attached to the stateroom, the booking, or a specific guest. For accessible travel, do not spend OBC on an excursion until the cruise line or excursion operator confirms the actual mobility, transfer, vehicle, and equipment requirements in writing.

A credit that cannot be used for the experience you need is not a bargain.

Verify before you pay

Ask the cruise line or your accredited travel advisor to confirm in writing:

  • What exact type of OBC is this?
  • Is it promotional, complimentary, purchased, refundable, or compensation-related?
  • Can it be used before sailing through Plan My Cruise?
  • Which categories are excluded?
  • Can it cover cruise-line excursions, specialty dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, spa services, or shopping?
  • Can it pay medical charges, future cruise deposits, taxes, gratuities, or cruise fare?
  • Does a booking change reduce or cancel the credit?
  • What currency will appear on the account?
  • What exchange-rate rule applies?
  • When will the credit post?
  • What is the expiration cutoff?
  • If refundable, how and when will the unused balance be returned?

Request written confirmation from Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, not only a verbal statement from a sales representative. Save the promotion, booking confirmation, OBC terms, account statement, and any email response.
