Great Stirrup Cay:
pier, pool and waterpark

A two-berth pier, a lagoon, an adults-only club and a paid waterpark. Which parts are worth your money, and which are already in the fare.

Great Stirrup Cay is no longer just a beach-and-buffet stop. Norwegian Cruise Line has added a two-berth pier, welcome plaza, tram service, Great Life Lagoon, and Great Tides Waterpark to its private island in The Bahamas.

Sources and facts checked: September 27, 2026 (America/New_York). Pass prices, operating hours, ride restrictions, cancellation windows and accessibility arrangements change by sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line before you pay.

That creates more choice: and more decisions. You can spend nothing beyond your cruise fare, reserve an adults-only beach experience, book a large villa for a group, or pay extra for a full day of slides and pools.

The important distinction: do not treat every advertised feature as guaranteed access on every sailing. Confirm your live itinerary, berth status, operating hours, and reservations before you pay.

What is new at Great Stirrup Cay?

NCL’s current Great Stirrup Cay page identifies these newer additions:

  • A multi-ship pier designed to accommodate two large vessels.
  • A welcome plaza.
  • Tram service around the destination.
  • Great Life Lagoon, a heated 1.4-acre pool area (NCL’s January 2026 official press release); some current NCL destination pages separately cite the water surface itself at roughly 28,000 square feet / about 2,600 m², which appears to be a different measurement.
  • Great Tides Waterpark, with 19 slides and additional water experiences.
  • Splash Harbor, a children’s splash area.

The pier is a meaningful change for guests who find tendering difficult. However, NCL’s marketing description is not a promise that your ship will always dock. Weather, marine conditions, port operations, construction or maintenance, and itinerary changes can affect how guests reach shore.

That caution is not theoretical. NCL’s rollout used a temporary pier from December 2025 until it closed on April 1, 2026, while work continued on the permanent two-berth pier targeted for the end of summer 2026. That documented construction history is exactly why you should confirm the live setup for your sailing instead of assuming the pier equals guaranteed dockside access.

Treat the pier as a strong possibility: not an accessibility guarantee. Ask NCL or your accredited travel advisor for written confirmation tied to your specific sailing.

Pier, tram, and crowd reality

A two-berth pier can allow two large NCL ships to visit Great Stirrup Cay at the same time. That does not automatically mean every guest will arrive at once, but it does change the potential crowd profile.

Your experience will depend on:

  • The number and size of ships calling that day.
  • Whether both berths are in use.
  • The ship’s passenger load.
  • Waterpark capacity and pre-booked excursions.
  • Arrival timing, tram demand, and return-to-ship patterns.

The new welcome plaza and tram service should make the arrival sequence more organized than the former tender-focused experience. Still, a private island with resort-style attractions can become busy quickly when two ships are present.

For a quieter day, walk beyond the first beach area, avoid the first rush ashore, and decide whether you need a reserved space before booking a premium experience.

Great Life Lagoon: the flexible pool day

Great Life Lagoon is the easiest upgrade to understand because access is included with the island visit. For sizing, use NCL’s official January 2026 press release figure of a 1.4-acre pool area as the primary reference. Some current NCL destination pages separately describe the water surface itself as about 28,000 square feet or roughly 2,600 m². Those figures likely reflect different measurement methods, so treat the official-source inconsistency the same way you would elsewhere: note both, but prioritize the official press-release framing for the broader pool complex. NCL describes the lagoon with beach-style entry, private cabanas, swim-up bars, and a nearby children’s splash area.

It suits several travel styles:

  • Solo travelers: A pool or beach day lets you move at your own pace without committing to a structured excursion.
  • Multigenerational families: Different generations can use the pool, splash area, beach, and food outlets without staying in one activity all day.
  • LGBTQ+ groups: A central pool area can work well as an informal meeting point before guests split into smaller groups.
  • Value-focused travelers: You can enjoy the island without buying a separate attraction pass.

Food at Great Stirrup Cay is generally complimentary at designated venues. Guests with NCL’s Free at Sea beverage package may use that package on the island, subject to the package’s current terms. Do not assume every premium drink, private venue, or upgraded menu item is included.

NCL’s current destination information also identifies paid cabanas and additional activities. Review the live reservation description rather than relying on an older blog post or social-media summary.

Vibe Shore Club: adults-only island time

Vibe Shore Club is NCL’s adults-only beach experience at Great Stirrup Cay. Expect a more controlled atmosphere, reserved seating options, a private bar, premium cocktails, and a quieter alternative to the main beach and pool areas.

NCL’s current Vibe Shore Club Day Pass listing shows pricing starting at $109.99 per person, and live pricing can vary by sailing and availability. If your booking includes Free at Sea, the $50 shore-excursion discount may apply on some sailings but not others, so check and verify with the cruise line in the live cart before paying full price.

One important clarification: some NCL marketing has stated or implied that Vibe access includes Silver Cove dining. Independent reporting indicates that is inaccurate. Vibe guests do not get Silver Cove’s restaurant or bar unless they have separately booked a Silver Cove villa. Treat Vibe and Silver Cove as separate premium products unless your live booking confirmation explicitly says otherwise.

This may make sense when:

  • You want an adults-only environment.
  • Your group values reserved loungers and a private setting.
  • You are not interested in water slides.
  • You want a destination experience with fewer children nearby.

Check the current age rules, admission terms, inclusions, and availability before purchase. “Adults-only” does not mean silent, private, or uncrowded all day.

Silver Cove: best for groups of 6 to 16

Silver Cove is the island’s private enclave for travelers who want more space and service. NCL states that its villas accommodate 6 to 16 guests and include access to a private beach, pool, restaurant and bar areas, full restrooms, patios, and views. The Silver Cove Spa is nearby.

Booking mechanics matter here. NCL has stated that Silver Cove villas can be pre-reserved online up to 180 days before sailing, first come, first served, or requested onboard at the shore excursions desk if inventory remains. NCL also states that up to two extra guests may be added above a villa’s stated occupancy cap for $25 per person, and that villa categories carry different onboard foodand-beverage credits ranging from $50 to $100 depending on category.

Silver Cove can be easier to justify for:

  • A multigenerational family group.
  • An LGBTQ+ group that wants a shared private base.
  • A milestone celebration.
  • Travelers who want shade, restrooms, food service, and a quieter retreat.

Do the math by the group, not by the headline price. A villa may offer better value when several guests would otherwise purchase separate premium seating, food, drinks, or day-use upgrades.

Confirm whether your reservation includes transportation, food and beverage service, beach access, pool access, spa access, the exact number of included guests, any extra-guest charges, and the specific onboard food-and-beverage credit for your villa category. Spa treatments should be treated as separate unless the live reservation explicitly says otherwise.

Great Tides Waterpark: what the paid pass buys

Great Tides Waterpark is an additional-cost experience. NCL describes it as a nearly six-acre waterpark with 19 slides, including eight kid-friendly slides and attractions.

The park includes four named areas:

  • Tidal Tower
  • Cliffside Cove
  • Wandering River
  • Splash Cay

NCL’s current FAQs list attractions with different minimum heights and maximum weights. Examples include:

Example Great Tides height and weight limits, per NCL’s current FAQs. Checked September 27, 2026.
AttractionMinimum heightMaximum weight
Breakwater Blasters 42 inches400 lbs
Whitewater Dash 42 inches300 lbs
Fearless Falls 48 inches300 lbs
The Great Slide 48 inches800 lbs combined, up to four guests

These are examples, not a substitute for checking the full live rules. Requirements may differ by slide, rider count, equipment, and operating conditions.

Guests ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a ticketed guest age 18 or older. Children ages 0–3 are listed by NCL as receiving complimentary admission, but confirm the current terms when booking.

Operating hours vary with the ship’s arrival and departure schedule. NCL says onboard hours will be provided during the sailing. A waterpark pass is not a guarantee that every slide will operate continuously.

NCL’s FAQ states that reservations may be modified or canceled up to 48 hours before arrival in port unless the activity description says otherwise. Review the current shore-excursion terms before paying.

Accessibility planning: ask for the specific route

NCL states that Great Tides Waterpark has accessible walkways throughout the park and that the Wandering River can be accessed by pool lift. That is useful information, but it does not mean every slide, jump, transfer surface, locker, restroom, beach area, or tram experience will work for every guest.

Use NCL’s current accessibility information and contact the Shoreside Access Desk with questions about your specific needs.

Ask in writing about:

  • The route from ship to pier or tender, if applicable.
  • Tram boarding and wheelchair storage.
  • Surface conditions between the welcome plaza, lagoon, waterpark, and beach.
  • Pool-lift availability and operating procedure.
  • Transfer requirements for individual slides.
  • Accessible restrooms and changing facilities.
  • Whether your mobility device can remain with you in the relevant area.
  • The exact return route and timing.

Work to a 90-day accessibility review — an OTGG planning habit, not an NCL deadline — and keep written confirmation from NCL. Submit the general accessibility/medical request through NCL’s Accessibility & Medical Questionnaire at least 45 days before sailing, and pre-request CPAP distilled water by calling NCL Reservations at least four days before sailing. Confirm the current form and deadlines before relying on them.

A submitted request is not the same as a confirmed accommodation. Save the confirmation number, written response, and the name or department that handled the request.

Devil’s Advocate: is the waterpark worth it?

Not necessarily.

If your sailing is short, your ship is sharing the island with another large vessel, or your group prefers the beach, a paid waterpark pass may create more scheduling pressure than value. You may spend much of the day waiting, transferring between attractions, or watching the clock before the ship departs.

The free pool, beaches, food, and included beverage-package access may be the better choice for a first visit. Book Great Tides when the slides are the reason for visiting: not simply because the newest attraction is the loudest one.

Verify before you pay

  • Confirm Great Stirrup Cay appears on your live itinerary.
  • Ask whether your sailing is scheduled for pier access or tendering; do not assume.
  • Confirm whether another NCL ship is visiting the same day.
  • Check Great Tides operating hours for your sailing.
  • Review every height, weight, age, and rider-count rule.
  • Confirm the cancellation policy and the 48-hour window for your excursion.
  • Confirm what your Free at Sea beverage package covers on the island.
  • Ask whether Vibe Shore Club or Silver Cove access is capacity-controlled.
  • Verify Vibe’s live day-pass price and whether your Free at Sea $50 shore-excursion discount applies.
  • Confirm in writing that Vibe access does not include Silver Cove restaurant or bar access unless you have separately booked a Silver Cove villa.
  • For Silver Cove, confirm the villa category, included guest count, any $25 extra-guest charges, and the exact $50–$100 onboard food-and-beverage credit attached to your category.
  • Obtain written accessibility confirmation from NCL’s Shoreside Access Desk.
  • Save all reservation terms and confirmation numbers.
