Private islands:
the new Caribbean port math

New piers, double calls and bigger crowds have changed what a private-island day actually delivers. The beach did not change; the arithmetic around it did.

Cruise lines are changing what a Caribbean private-island day means.

Sources and facts checked: September 24, 2026 (America/New_York). Island operations, pier status, capacity and fees change by season and sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line before you pay.

More destinations now have piers, so ships can unload faster, host multiple vessels at once and reshuffle private-island calls more easily.

For you, that means a private island is no longer automatically a quiet beach day. Check ship count, layout, inclusions and whether the stop was recently swapped.

This matters whether you are comparing adults-only cruise options, researching Virgin Voyages insider access, planning an LGBTQ+ group trip or coordinating a multi-generational family day.

What changed in 2026?

Great Stirrup Cay gets a second-ship problem

Norwegian Cruise Line’s new pier at Great Stirrup Cay hosted its first true double-ship call in September 2026, with Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Getaway alongside at the same time. Cruise Industry News also reported that Norwegian expects approximately 30 additional double calls during 2026, including a December 21, 2026 call by Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Getaway.

This is different from the first ship ever to use the pier. Norwegian Getaway first docked there on December 28, 2025, when the pier had single-ship capacity only and a second ship that same day still had to tender. Two-ship simultaneous capacity came later in 2026, culminating in the September 2026 first true double call.

The pier project represents a reported investment of roughly $150 million.

Cruise Industry News reported the first double call, the additional 2026 schedule and the phased pier context.

Great Tides Waterpark opened on September 4, 2026, coinciding with Norwegian Luna’s arrival. The nearly six-acre attraction includes 19 waterslides, a dynamic river, Horizon Park and Hammock Bay. The waterpark adds another reason to visit, but it also creates another layer of paid capacity to monitor.

NCL’s official release confirms the opening date, the waterpark’s 19 slides and river.

Sources differ on the name of the children’s water play area, using both “Splash Town” and “Splash Harbor.” Confirm the current official name with NCL when you book. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Princess Cays is being replaced on some Princess sailings

Trade press reported that Princess removed Princess Cays from Sun Princess’s November 22, 2026 seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailing and replaced it with RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. The sailing still includes Amber Cove, San Juan and Grand Turk. Guests with pre-booked Princess Cays excursions are scheduled to receive automatic refunds, while replacement Half Moon Cay tours were expected to be added within two weeks. This later Sun Princess substitution does not conflict with separate reporting about an earlier last confirmed Princess Cays call in October 2026; confirm the current itinerary and excursion treatment directly with Princess. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Cruise Critic reported the broader Princess Cays change.

Trade press and line schedules indicate that Carnival ships continue to call at Princess Cays through 2026, with seven Carnival vessels scheduled. Confirm the current sailing schedule directly with Carnival before payment. Do not assume that a Princess change means the destination is closed or unavailable to every cruise line. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Carnival is rearranging the private-island sequence

Carnival adjusted selected 2026–2028 itineraries on Carnival Conquest, Carnival Legend and Carnival Elation. Changes include swapping Celebration Key and RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, moving the order of port days and modifying time in port.

Carnival also adjusted port times at Celebration Key on more than 50 Jacksonville departures through April 2028. Pre-purchased shore excursions are intended to be adjusted automatically when the itinerary changes. Check and verify with the cruise line.

These are not minor edits. A different order can change crowd levels, value and excursion timing.

The pier-versus-tender trade

A pier makes it easier to get ashore.

That can help travelers using mobility devices, families with different walking speeds and solo guests who want a simpler morning. But a pier does not create more beach space. It just moves the bottleneck from the tender line to the beach, buffet, pool, tram or water attraction.

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay now uses a new pier for qualifying calls, while Celebration Key was designed as a pier-based destination. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Cruise Critic compares the two destinations and their current operating models.

Celebration Key and RelaxAway are not interchangeable

Treat them as different products, not two names for the same beach day.

Celebration Key

Celebration Key is a purpose-built resort-style destination on Grand Bahama with freshwater lagoons, waterslides, an adults-only Pearl Cove Beach Club and a complimentary meal credit through Island Eats. Confirm the current meal-credit structure at booking. Check and verify with the cruise line.

That credit is not the same as an unlimited buffet. Extra dining, drinks and premium spaces may cost more, and Pearl Cove is a paid add-on; confirm current pricing and inclusions before booking. Check and verify with the cruise line.

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay

RelaxAway focuses on a more natural beach day, with a 2.5-mile beach. Check and verify with the cruise line., complimentary loungers and an unlimited buffet lunch included in the fare; confirm current inclusions at booking. Check and verify with the cruise line. It does not currently offer the same dedicated adults-only beach-club product as Celebration Key. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Eat Sleep Cruise provides a third-party comparison of the destinations’ food setup and paid upgrades; confirm current inclusions directly with Carnival or Princess before booking.

Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay belongs in the same broader conversation, but it has its own pricing model. Use the OTGG CocoCay port guide rather than assuming one strategy works across every line.

The new crowding problem

Tendering used to limit how quickly guests reached shore. Piers remove that friction.

Now check:

  • How many ships are scheduled that day?
  • Is your ship sharing the destination with another vessel?
  • Does the destination have more than one pier?
  • Is the beach included, or are the best spaces paid?
  • Does your planned excursion depend on a narrow port window?
  • Is the ship calling during a holiday or peak school-break period?

A double call can be manageable at a large destination and crowded at a smaller one. Decide your priorities early.

Five ways to get the better version of the day

Check the day’s ship count

Check the cruise line itinerary, the port schedule and your booking portal. Recheck close to sailing because private-island schedules are changing. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Board early or late

Go early for the best loungers, or later for a quieter final swim.

Do not assume midday is calm. That is often when both ships are fully ashore.

Buy the paid enclave only when the math works

A paid adults-only beach club can make sense if you want quieter space, a dedicated pool and included premium food or drinks.

Skip it if you only want a lounger and a swim. Compare the upgrade against:

  • The number of hours in port
  • The ship count
  • Your group size
  • Whether food and drinks are included
  • Cancellation terms
  • Whether the space is guaranteed or capacity-controlled

Treat a swapped island as a different day

Princess Cays, RelaxAway and Celebration Key may all be labeled “private island,” but they are different products.

Rebuild your plan instead of treating the replacement as equal value.

Put accessibility details in writing

A pier helps, but it does not guarantee an accessible beach day for every traveler. Ask the cruise line and destination operator to confirm:

  • The pier used by your ship
  • The distance from ship to accessible transport
  • Beach mat or hard-surface access
  • Accessible restrooms and dining routes
  • Pool-lift availability
  • Wheelchair or scooter restrictions
  • Whether your excursion uses a tender, tram or uneven path

Request written confirmation from the cruise line, port operator, transfer provider or excursion operator. A verbal “that should be fine” is not a plan.

If your private island is swapped

Follow this order:

  1. Save the original itinerary and the revised itinerary.
  2. Check the new port’s pier, beach, food and excursion model.
  3. Confirm whether your excursion is refunded, moved or canceled.
  4. Rebook only after checking the new cancellation terms.
  5. Ask for written confirmation of accessibility arrangements, if relevant.
  6. Recalculate the day instead of assuming equal value.

Devil’s Advocate: private does not mean peaceful

A private-island day is not automatically a value day.

You may still share it with two or more ships, and “included” may stop at a chair and lunch while the best pool, cabana, adults-only zone, waterpark or restaurant costs extra.

Capacity is the constraint.

If you dislike crowds, a traditional port or smaller destination may suit you better. Compare the full day, not the label.

Verify before you pay

  • Confirm the current itinerary and ship count.
  • Check whether the call is docked or tendered for your specific ship.
  • Compare included food with paid dining.
  • Price the total cost of any waterpark, cabana or adults-only enclave.
  • Confirm excursion timing after any itinerary swap.
  • Obtain written confirmation of refunds or rebookings.
  • Put accessibility arrangements in writing.
  • Recheck the schedule within 30 days of sailing. Check and verify with the cruise line.

Frequently asked

Is a private-island call always docked?

No. Some newer destinations use piers, but the setup still varies by line, ship and call. Confirm your sailing.

Is RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay the same as Celebration Key?

No. RelaxAway is more natural and includes buffet lunch. Celebration Key is more resort-style, with paid add-ons and a paid adults-only beach club.

Will a double-ship call ruin the day?

Not necessarily. Larger destinations may handle it well, but queues and beach density can rise. Check ship count and plan your arrival.

What happens when Princess Cays is replaced?

The line may swap in another destination, refund affected excursions and add replacement tours. Confirm the exact treatment on your booking.

Are private-island beaches accessible?

Some features may be available, but terrain, transport and water access vary. Get written confirmation.

Should solo travelers avoid private-island calls?

No. Just check whether paid spaces are per person and whether the included features are enough for you.

Can an itinerary change lower the value of my cruise?

Yes. A substitute stop may change food, layout, excursions or accessibility. Reassess before paying for extras.
