Tortola:
the British Virgin Islands gateway day, planned

The Baths are the signature side trip, but the ferry, the taxi and the return chain make them a half-day decision. Here is how to price the day, and when a Tortola beach or boat trip is the better call.

The Baths are Tortola’s signature side trip, but the ferry math makes them a half-day decision, not a quick stop.

Sources and facts checked: October 26, 2026 (America/New_York). Ferry timetables and fares, taxi tariffs, park hours, pier assignments and excursion details change. Check and verify with the cruise line or vendor before you pay.

The Baths earn their reputation, but they take time

The Baths on Virgin Gorda are the headline excursion: granite boulders, grottoes, tidal pools and passages at the southwestern tip of the island. From Road Town, allow about 30 minutes each way by ferry to Spanish Town, then a taxi. Check the BVI Tourist Board ferry schedules for the current timetable.

Treat this as the main event. Do not stack it with a beach stop. Ferry schedules are set and do not flex for cruise ship departures; missing the last return ferry from Virgin Gorda is a ship-missing event. Confirm the sailing-day schedule and fare with the ferry operator. Work the return chain backwards: taxi from The Baths to the ferry terminal (10-15 minutes), the ferry crossing (30-45 minutes), the walk from the Road Town ferry dock to the cruise pier (10-12 minutes) and the re-boarding queue (10-20 minutes), for a minimum of about 60 to 92 minutes on the way back. A practical rule: plan to leave Virgin Gorda at least two hours before your all-aboard time, plus a personal buffer on top.

Routes involve boulder passages, steps and water crossings. The National Parks Trust describes a trail with steps and rope handrails through the boulders to Devil’s Bay, but this is not a suitable outing for many mobility devices. Agree on a shared alternative before anyone buys a ticket.

Road Town is close, but check how your ship comes ashore

The cruise pier is in Road Town, the British Virgin Islands capital, beside the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park. The BVI Ports Authority describes a cruise pier, an adjacent tender pier, and a separate passenger facility used mainly by local ferries. Confirm your assigned berth with the cruise line.

Ships commonly dock, but anchoring and tendering are possible: the authority says the pier takes ships up to 180,000 gross tons, and larger ships anchor in the harbor. Confirm your arrival mode, because a tender changes the timing before your day begins. BVI Ports Authority, facilities

Waterfront Drive, Sir Olva Georges Plaza and the shopping area are a short walk from the pier. Tortola was heavily damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, and recovery took years. Do not assume an older guide describes today’s island.

Used by: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Disney, Marella and P&O have been listed among lines calling at Tortola; current schedules and operators vary, so confirm the call list for your sailing.

Price the crossing and taxi legs separately

The cost is not just a ferry ticket. Add the road transfer, park entry and return trip. Taxi fares below are the published one-way rates from the cruise dock in the BVI’s 2022 fare regulations; check and verify current fares with the taxi dispatcher or venue.

OTGG planning summary. Checked October 26, 2026.
ItemPublished amount or status
Taxi from cruise dock to Cane Garden Bay Beach $24 for one passenger; $16 per passenger for two; $12 per passenger for three or more, one way.
Taxi from cruise dock to Brewers Bay $24 for one passenger; $16 per passenger for two; $12 per passenger for three or more, one way.
Taxi from cruise dock to Smugglers Cove $32 for one passenger; $18 per passenger for two; $15 per passenger for three or more, one way.
Road Town to Spanish Town ferry Speedy's Ferry lists $30 one way and $40 round trip for adults; other operators and third-party listings show lower fares, from about $20 to $25 one way. Confirm the current fare with your ferry operator.
Spanish Town to The Baths The 2022 regulations list $10 for one passenger and $5 each for two or more from Valley/Spanish Town, in the table for cruise passengers landing on Virgin Gorda. Confirm the fare before you ride.
The Baths park entry National Parks Trust lists $3 adult, $2 child; park hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The tariff prices these rides per passenger, falling as your group grows. Confirm the total for your party before boarding.

A Tortola beach or boat trip can be the better fit

Choose the day your group can enjoy, not the one with the most famous name.

  • Cane Garden Bay: 15 to 20 minutes by taxi over the ridge. Beach bars, calm water and the Callwood rum distillery nearby. Confirm distillery visiting times before you go.
  • Norman Island and the Indians: Snorkeling boat trips to the Caves and the fish-and-coral site. Compare current operators and inclusions.
  • Jost Van Dyke: White Bay and the Soggy Dollar Bar, but ferry schedules can make it tight on a port call, and the public ferries leave from West End, not Road Town, so add the drive.
  • Brewers Bay: Quieter, near the airport, good snorkeling.
  • Smugglers Cove: More remote, about 30 minutes by taxi, and the last stretch of road can be rough; ask your driver about current conditions.
  • Sage Mountain National Park: The island’s high point, about 1,716 feet, with rainforest trails. Check trail conditions with the National Parks Trust.

For a mixed-age group, split the plans: one group ferries to The Baths while the other stays on Tortola, with a set meeting time. Solo travelers can use an organized excursion to simplify transport, but confirm who operates it.

Devil's advocate: the ferry may not be worth the day

A ferry, a taxi and a timed return can feel like a logistics exercise on a short call. If you want an easier day, Cane Garden Bay may be the better choice.

The counterpoint: if The Baths are why you chose the itinerary, a timed half-day may be worth it. Decide with the actual port hours and confirmed ferry schedule in front of you.

Match the excursion to the access details, not the label

Use accessibility-conscious planning. The pier and Road Town waterfront are described as flat and modern; confirm current surfaces with the port. Cane Garden Bay has a developed beach access point; ask the cruise line or operator whether a beach wheelchair is available.

The Baths involve rock scrambling, steep passages and water crossings, and they are not suitable for most mobility devices. Ferry crossings involve steps and gaps. Ask the operator about boarding and assistance, and get answers in writing. Ask about Virgin Gorda alternatives before you book. Check the ferry timetable against your ship’s hours, including the return sailing.

Are fares, taxis and park entry in writing?

Get written confirmation of ferry fares, taxi costs and park entry.

Where do excursions meet, and what are the terms?

Ask excursion operators for the meeting point, duration and cancellation terms.
