St. Thomas offers more than eight hours can hold, which is the actual difficulty with it. Beaches, an aerial viewpoint, a duty-free high street, colonial architecture, and a ferry to a national park on the next island. The island is steep, the afternoon traffic is real, and the ship does not wait.
Pick one beach, one viewpoint and one town. Everything below is about making that choice well and knowing what each piece costs before you are standing at a taxi stand deciding.
First: which dock?

Your daily programme confirms the assignment, and it is worth reading before you plan anything: from Havensight the Skyride is a walk, and from Crown Bay it is a fare. (The Port Authority, Royal Caribbean Group and Cruise Terminals International signed a Crown Bay District redevelopment agreement in December 2025, so expect that terminal's surroundings to change over the next few seasons.)
The correction most St. Thomas guides need
Fort Christian is not dependably open, and nearly every port guide still says to prioritise it. It is a designated disaster-recovery project: under architectural and engineering review, with conceptual plans for the museum expected in August 2026 and exhibition design and installation still to follow the structural work. Access and hours vary with the restoration. See it from Emancipation Garden — it is the oldest standing structure in the territory and the exterior is the landmark — but do not build a block of a four-hour town window around getting inside it.

Taxi fares here are per person, which is the opposite of San Juan. St. Thomas taxis are shared by design and the Taxicab Commission sets a per-passenger rate by destination. If you want the vehicle to yourselves, the published route is an exclusive ride — priced at a minimum of four passengers. For a couple that is four fares, not a small upgrade. Confirm the destination, the per-person fare, and whether the ride is shared or exclusive, before you climb in.

Paradise Point
The Skyride climbs to a terrace above Charlotte Amalie harbour in about seven minutes, and the panorama over the town, the ships and the neighbouring islands is the best easily reachable view on St. Thomas. $29.95 adult, $19.95 child, round trip, with unlimited rides the same day. From Havensight the base station is a short walk; from Crown Bay, add a fare.
Two things to check before you spend an hour on it. Its operating schedule follows the cruise ship calendar rather than fixed daily hours, and it closes periodically for maintenance — on a light ship day it may not be running at all. And, in the operator's own words, it is not wheelchair accessible.
Magens Bay
The signature beach: a long, calm north-shore bay with facilities, food and enough room that a full ship does not ruin it. $7 for non-residents, under-12s free, $2 to park if you have a car. Shared taxi is roughly $12 to $15 per person each way from either dock.
Magens Bay admits holders of a valid disabled parking plate or placard free, and offers discounts to veterans and active military with ID. If your group includes someone the Skyride cannot accommodate, this is the anchor to build the day on — and it is the most useful single fact in this guide.
Give it at least two hours. Less than that and you have paid for transport, entry and a towel inspection.
Charlotte Amalie
Main Street is the duty-free run — jewellery, watches, spirits — with the alleys down to the waterfront the pleasant way through it. Emancipation Garden is the civic heart and the place to view Fort Christian from. The 99 Steps climb toward Government Hill and the Danish colonial architecture at the top, which repays the effort; the steps are steep and, as everyone discovers, there are rather more than 99 of them.
St. John and Trunk Bay: the honest assessment
Spectacular, and transport-heavy in a way that does not suit a short call. The independent chain is taxi to Red Hook, ferry to Cruz Bay, taxi across St. John to Trunk Bay, then all of it again in reverse — four links, each able to slip.
A date-specific warning if you are sailing now. A temporary off-season Red Hook–Cruz Bay ferry schedule runs 26 July to 31 October 2026, with reduced, on-the-hour departures instead of the usual half-hourly service. Missing a ferry in that window costs a full hour rather than thirty minutes, and an hour is most of a return buffer. Add the $5 Trunk Bay amenity fee for ages 16 and up on top of transit.
Treat Trunk Bay as an alternative to Magens Bay, not an addition to it. On a short call, with children or older relatives, or if you simply want someone else to own the timing, take the ship excursion — what the premium buys is that the ship waits for the operator, and it does not wait for you.
Shaping the day around who you are with
- Solo: the easiest independent port in this series. Official taxi stands at both docks, published per-person fares, shared beach transfers as standard. An hour at Paradise Point, three at Magens Bay, ninety minutes downtown, and the rest in transfers and buffer.
- Couples: the same shape with more beach and a longer wander. Resist the private taxi unless you genuinely need a fixed pickup — at a four-passenger minimum it is rarely the better buy for two.
- Multigenerational groups: fewer moves, longer stays. Magens Bay as the anchor, a relaxed town or terminal hour, and one transfer each way. Do not stack Paradise Point, Magens Bay, downtown and St. John into one day — the hills, heat, steps and vehicle transfers compound faster than the schedule suggests.
- Anyone with mobility needs: the Skyride is out, by the operator's own statement. Magens Bay is in, and free with a disabled plate or placard. Ask specifically for transport that does not require climbing into a high-sided safari truck, and confirm beach access arrangements with the Authority before the day.
Practical notes
- Carry small US bills. Taxis, safari trucks, beach entry and smaller vendors are cash environments.
- Confirm the fare and whether it is shared before boarding — every time, including the return.
- Shoes with traction. Hills, steps and uneven sidewalks, all of them in heat.
- Sunscreen and water. Shade is not guaranteed anywhere in this itinerary.
- Do not walk between Crown Bay and Havensight. It is not a pedestrian route.
- Nothing far east late in the day. Afternoon traffic around Charlotte Amalie thickens sharply.
- Keep ship time visible on your phone or watch, and start back before you think you need to.
Common questions
Havensight or Crown Bay — does it matter which dock I get?
Yes, and it changes your budget as well as your schedule. Havensight, the West Indian Company dock, puts the Skyride base across the road and the Havensight shops at the pier, with downtown Charlotte Amalie a short taxi or safari ride away. Crown Bay — formally the Austin “Babe” Monsanto Marine Terminal, a Virgin Islands Port Authority facility — sits west of town near the airport, with a smaller shopping centre, and you will need transport for downtown, Magens Bay and Paradise Point alike. Both are deep-water berths, so there is no tender either way. Check your daily programme.
How much is the Skyride to Paradise Point?
$29.95 for adults and $19.95 for children, round trip, with unlimited rides the same day. The tram takes about seven minutes each way and the views over Charlotte Amalie harbour are the best easily reachable panorama on the island. Is the Paradise Point Skyride wheelchair accessible?
No. The operator states it plainly: “we are not handicap accessible.” This matters because Paradise Point is the attraction most often recommended to multigenerational groups, and the recommendation quietly assumes everyone can use it. If your party includes a wheelchair or scooter user, or anyone who cannot manage the tram and the terrace at the top, plan the viewpoint out rather than discovering the problem at the base station. Magens Bay is the better anchor for a mixed-mobility group, and admission there is free with a valid disabled plate or placard.
How much does Magens Bay cost?
$7 per person for non-residents, with children under 12 admitted free and parking at $2 per vehicle if you have your own car. The part most guides miss: entry is free for holders of a valid disabled parking plate or placard, and there are discounts for veterans and active military with ID. Should I book a ship excursion or go independently in St. Thomas?
Independently for Magens Bay, Paradise Point and downtown — all three have official taxi stands, published fares and no coordination problem worth paying to solve. Take the ship excursion when the plan involves leaving the island, several linked transfers, a larger multigenerational group, or anyone who needs guaranteed accessibility support. What the excursion premium actually buys is protection: if the operator is late, the ship waits. On a self-arranged chain of taxis and ferries, it does not.
