Roatán and Costa Maya often appear as interchangeable stops on a Western Caribbean itinerary. They are not. Roatán is an island divided between two cruise-port experiences, reef access and a negotiated taxi market. Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise complex beside Mahahual, where the pier village is convenient, but emphatically not the destination.
Sources and facts checked: September 19, 2026 (America/New_York). Pier assignments, operator availability, taxi rates and accessibility arrangements change by sailing and season. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator before you pay.
This guide follows the Journal’s Cozumel, Grand Cayman and San Juan eight-hours-ashore format.
If accessibility is part of your planning, use this guide alongside OTGG’s separate accessible shore-day guidance for the Caribbean. That companion piece addresses the broader verification chain; this article focuses on what is realistically possible at these two ports.
Roatán: Choose Your Pier Before You Choose Your Beach
Roatán has two principal cruise-port setups:
- Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, also increasingly marketed as Isla Tropicale, with its own port beach.
- Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole, a town-center facility with shops, taxis and access to independent tours.
The ship’s berth determines your starting point. Check the daily assignment before you commit to a nonrefundable tour.
Roatán highlights
- Mahogany Beach: The private beach inside Mahogany Bay is the lowest-logistics option.
- West Bay Beach: The island’s best-known beach and a gateway to reef snorkeling.
- West End: A smaller village with restaurants, local operators and water-taxi connections.
- Roatan Marine Park reef: A shore-snorkeling option for confident swimmers under suitable conditions.
- Coxen Hole and local culture: Better suited to travelers who want town life rather than a resort beach.
What the pier setup actually means
At Mahogany Bay, the ship connects to a purpose-built cruise center with shopping, food, transport and an on-site beach. Confirm surface, kerb and step conditions directly with the port and your excursion operator in writing before you rely on that route.
The official Princess excursion description and Carnival’s current excursion information both state, in equivalent terms, that the aerial chairlift is not accessible for guests using wheelchairs, canes, rollators or other mobility devices. Confirmed against both lines’ official excursion pages on 19 September 2026.
Do not treat the chairlift as an accessibility solution. It is a ride for guests who can safely transfer and meet the operator’s requirements. The paved walkway is the relevant alternative, but it is not effortless: it includes gradual slopes and generally requires either a motorized device or an assisting companion. Confirm whether assistance, a scooter or a powered chair is appropriate for your group, and get that confirmation in writing.
Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole is different. The terminal is in the capital’s town center, but West Bay is not a casual walk from the pier. You need a taxi, private vehicle or prearranged tour.
Taxi and tour-market reality
Roatán has a formal port-taxi structure and a separate independent market outside the controlled terminal area. The Roatán Tourism Bureau publishes a taxi-rate table for common destinations. Its listed structure is commonly based on passenger count, with additional passengers charged separately. Some operators describe a quote as round-trip; others quote one-way.
That distinction matters. Before boarding, ask:
- Is the fare per person or per vehicle?
- Is it one-way or round-trip?
- Will the driver wait?
- Where exactly is the return pickup?
- Is the vehicle suitable for a folding wheelchair, scooter or other equipment?. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. published taxi rates, current zone rules and whether the quoted amount includes the return journey.
Independent tours can offer better value than a ship excursion, particularly for a small group that wants one vehicle and a fixed route. The trade-off is responsibility. Confirm the meeting point, portgate access, vehicle type, cancellation terms and return plan in writing.
Reef and beach options ranked by time
Fastest: stay at Mahogany Beach. This is the sensible choice when your call is short, the ship shares the port with other vessels or you
want a low-stress beach break. You avoid the island-road transfer and can return to the terminal without depending on traffic.
Moderate: West Bay without a reef boat. A taxi to West Bay gives you beach time and the possibility of shore snorkeling. The Roatán Tourism Bureau describes West Bay as a beach and reef destination, but independent reef access still depends on swimming ability, sea conditions, boat traffic and the exact beach entrance.
Longer: West Bay plus a snorkel boat. A boat can reduce the amount of swimming required to reach reef habitat, but boarding introduces another accessibility question. Ask about dock height, steps, transfer assistance, life-jacket fit and whether the operator can accommodate your equipment.
Most flexible: West End plus West Bay. The water taxi between the two areas is often presented as a short local connection, but its fare and operating schedule are live information. It also requires boarding a small boat, which may rule it out for some travelers. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. all Roatán transfer times, water-taxi fares, operating hours, beach-service prices and Marine Park contribution amounts.
A flexible Roatán schedule
- Arrival to 60 minutes: Clear the pier, confirm your operator and avoid committing to a second activity before transport is settled.
- 60 minutes to 4 hours: Choose one anchor activity: Mahogany Beach, West Bay, West End or a prearranged reef trip.
- 4 to 6 hours: Add lunch, a short town stop or a beach change only if traffic and return logistics remain comfortable.
- Final 60–90 minutes: Return to the terminal. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. the recommended return buffer should be matched to your ship’s published all-aboard time, pier assignment and traffic conditions.
Roatán accessibility reality
Mahogany Bay is the more predictable port-side option because the terminal and beach connection are designed for cruise guests. The chairlift is not a wheelchair-accessible device; the paved route is the relevant option.
West Bay is more complicated. Loose sand, beach entrances, boat docks and standard taxis can create barriers even when a tour listing uses the phrase “accessible.” Request written confirmation of:
- A ramp or lift-equipped vehicle.
- Whether you may remain in your chair.
- The route from vehicle to sand or dock.
- Restroom and shade access.
- Boarding steps and transfer requirements.
- What happens if sea conditions cancel the water portion.
Roatán OTGG value strategy
Pay for one strong experience rather than stacking three distant stops. If your priority is reef time, skip the inland wildlife stop. If your priority is accessibility, choose the port beach or a specifically adapted operator rather than trying to make a standard beach transfer work through enthusiasm alone.
Devil’s Advocate: leave the pier, or don’t?
Leaving Mahogany Bay can produce a more local and memorable day, but it also adds road traffic, unclear fare structures and a less predictable return. Staying inside the port is not automatically a failure. For a short call, a mobility-limited group or a day with multiple ships, the “easy” option may be the smartest one.
Roatán verify-before-you-pay checklist
- Confirm whether the ship is at Mahogany Bay or Coxen Hole.
- Obtain the taxi or tour quote in writing.
- Confirm per-person versus per-vehicle pricing.
- Confirm one-way versus round-trip terms.
- Confirm the vehicle and beach-access arrangement.
- Confirm cancellation protection if the ship changes berth or misses port.
- Confirm pickup location and return time.
- Build a 60–90 minute return buffer. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator.
Costa Maya: The Port Village Is Not the Destination
Costa Maya’s official cruise facility is Puerto Costa Maya, a purpose-built pier complex beside Mahahual. Ships dock directly, and the port feeds passengers into a controlled village of shops, bars, restaurants, a pool and cruise-oriented attractions.
That village is useful. It is not Mahahual, and it is not the beach town most travelers imagine when they book a Costa Maya itinerary.
To reach the real beachfront and malecón, leave the complex through the main exit and use the official taxi stand or a prearranged transfer.
Costa Maya highlights
- Mahahual malecón: The practical choice for a beach, lunch and a slower local atmosphere.
- Chacchoben: The most realistic major ruins option for a carefully managed port day.
- Bacalar Lagoon: Attractive but transfer-heavy.
- Kohunlich: Historically compelling, but generally too distant for a relaxed independent eight-hour call.
- Puerto Costa Maya village: A fallback for minimal logistics, not the destination itself.
What getting beyond the port costs
Reported taxi information commonly places the port-to-Mahahual ride at approximately US$4–5 per person or about US$8 per cab each way. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. The fare basis and current posted tariff must be checked at the taxi stand before boarding.
Longer destinations require a different calculation. Reported private-transfer figures commonly place Chacchoben around US$70–80 per vehicle and Bacalar around US$60–80 per vehicle. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. These amounts may not include entrance fees, guides, waiting time, meals or beach-club access.
What fits an eight-hour call?
Mahahual beach: Yes, with the least risk. The reported transfer is approximately 5–10 minutes each way. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. Use the malecón for a short beach-and-lunch plan, then return to the port with time to spare.
Chacchoben: Possible, but book it as the day’s main event. Mexico’s INAH listing publishes daily hours of 09:00–17:00 and a listed entrance cost of MX$155. Confirmed against the INAH page on 19 September 2026. Travel estimates commonly place the drive at approximately 50–60 minutes each way. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. on the drive time.
Use the official INAH figures, not the ones most commonly repeated elsewhere. Many tour-operator pages and secondary listings cite lower entrance prices and different opening hours; INAH is the regulating authority for the site and its own published fee takes precedence over an operator’s approximation. Use a ship excursion or a private operator with written port-call experience.
Bacalar: Beautiful but transfer-heavy. Reported road time is approximately 70–75 minutes each way. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. That leaves less room for a lagoon experience, weather disruption or a delayed return. Treat it as a prearranged excursion, not a spontaneous taxi decision.
Kohunlich: Usually a poor fit for an independent eight-hour call. It sits farther inland than Chacchoben, and reported drive estimates can exceed 90 minutes each way. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. Choose it only when the operator has matched the excursion to your ship’s exact schedule and provides written return protection.
A flexible Costa Maya schedule
- Arrival to 90 minutes: Walk through the port complex, reach the exit and confirm your transportation.
- 90 minutes to 5 hours: Choose Mahahual, Chacchoben or Bacalar, not all three.
- 5 to 6 hours: Begin the return journey. Do not wait until the ship’s final boarding window.
- Final 60–90 minutes: Be back inside the port complex before all-aboard. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator. confirm the live ship schedule, traffic and operator return time.
Costa Maya accessibility reality
The port complex is generally flatter and easier to navigate than the surrounding beach and ruin sites, but the pier can involve a long walk. The port trolley should not be treated as a guaranteed wheelchair-accessible service without written confirmation.
Mahahual’s malecón may be more manageable than loose sand, but individual beach clubs differ. Confirm ramps, firm-surface access, restrooms, shade and the distance from vehicle drop-off to seating.
Chacchoben includes uneven natural surfaces and does not become fully accessible simply because a tour advertises “easy.” Ask whether the vehicle has a lift, whether you must transfer and how much of the site can be viewed without climbing.
Costa Maya OTGG value strategy
Use the port village only when convenience is the priority. Otherwise, spend the transfer money on one clearly defined experience. Mahahual gives you the best value for a short call; Chacchoben gives you the strongest culture-and-history option; Bacalar requires enough margin to justify the road time.
Devil’s Advocate: is the famous excursion worth the gamble?
A distant ruin or lagoon can be the highlight of the cruise, or the reason you spend the day watching the clock. If your ship’s call is short, your group includes mobility needs or your independent operator cannot provide written return assurances, choose Mahahual or remain near the port. The postcard is not worth a missed sailing.
Costa Maya verify-before-you-pay checklist
- Confirm that your plan leaves the Puerto Costa Maya complex.
- Confirm the fare basis: per person or per vehicle.
- Confirm whether entrance fees, guides and meals are included.
- Obtain written confirmation of pickup and return arrangements.
- Confirm vehicle accessibility and restroom access.
- Recheck INAH hours and entrance pricing for Chacchoben.
- Confirm the operator monitors ship-time changes.
- Build a 60–90 minute return buffer. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator.
Frequently asked
Is Costa Maya the same as Mahahual?
No. Puerto Costa Maya is the cruise terminal and gated port village. Mahahual is the nearby beach town and malecón.
Which Roatán port is better for the beach?
Mahogany Bay offers an on-site beach and simpler logistics. Coxen Hole places you closer to town but requires transport for West Bay.
Can I snorkel independently in Roatán?
Yes, confident swimmers may reach reef areas from West Bay, subject to conditions and local safety rules. Ask the beach operator about marked swim zones and boat traffic.
Which Costa Maya ruin best fits a port day?
Chacchoben is generally the most practical major ruin option, but only with live timing and written transport confirmation. Check and verify with the cruise line or operator.
