RoyalUp and MoveUp
bid math

An upgrade bid is not just the bid. Gratuities move with the category, solo pricing behaves oddly, and a winning bid can cost you the accessible cabin you carefully chose.

## The short answer: compare certainty, not just price

Sources and facts checked: September 18, 2026 (America/New_York). Bid mechanics, minimums, gratuity treatment and cancellation rules change without notice and differ by brand. Check and verify with the cruise line before you bid.

RoyalUp and MoveUp can produce a higher-category cabin for less than buying that category outright. They can also leave you with a cabin in a less desirable location, higher gratuities, no new promotions, and no guarantee that your traveling party stays together.

The correct question is not, “How low can I bid?”

Ask instead:

Is the uncertain cabin assignment worth the difference between my guaranteed cabin price and the bid’s real all-in cost?

Royal Caribbean’s RoyalUp terms and conditions and Celebrity’s official MoveUp page and terms establish the core rules.

RoyalUp versus MoveUp: the rules that affect the math

OTGG planning summary. Checked September 18, 2026.

Invitation Participation is selected by the cruise line and is not guaranteed, even when cabins appear available.Participation is selected by Celebrity and is not guaranteed, even when cabins appear available.
Eligibility timing Varies by sailing and booking; no universal invitation date is promised.Eligible reservations are identified within 90 days of departure (. Check and verify with the cruise line.; verify against live MoveUp terms).
Bid basis Per person, for the full cruise, based on double occupancy.Per person, for the full cruise, based on double occupancy.
Solo booking For single-occupancy guest bookings, the guest will be charged the double-occupancy offer amount; Royal Caribbean's FAQ gives the example that a $100 bid becomes a $200 total for the stateroom. The solo guest is charged based on double occupancy.
Guests charged The offer amount applies only to the first and second guests in the booking and is not charged to third and higher guests. The first and second guests are charged; additional guests do not add another bid charge.
Gratuities By upgrading to a higher stateroom category, each guest in the booking may be subject to a higher gratuity amount, and the offer amount does not include the higher gratuity.Higher-category gratuities may apply and are separate from the offer amount.
Promotions Original promotions remain; the upgrade does not add promotions attached to the higher category.Original promotions remain; the upgrade does not add promotions attached to the higher category.
Loyalty points Crown & Anchor points remain based on the original category purchased; for example, an upgrade from a standard stateroom to a suite through RoyalUp does not earn double points.Captain’s Club points remain based on the original category purchased.
Location The cruise line assigns the cabin. Location, obstruction, and cabin number are not guaranteed.Celebrity assigns the cabin. Location, deck, cabin attributes, and possible obstruction are not guaranteed.
Cancellation Royal Caribbean's RoyalUp materials describe the modification window inconsistently — the FAQ pages state up to 2 days (48 hours) before departure, while program terms indicate 12 hours. Confirm the applica- ble window in writing for your sailing before relying on it (. Check and verify with the cruise line.).Offers may be modified or cancelled only before acceptance and up to 48 hours before depar- ture (. Check and verify with the cruise line.).
After acceptance Once a bid is accepted, the card is charged immediately, and the upgrade amount paid is final and non-refundable.The charge is final and non-refundable, subject only to narrow cancellation or rebooking exceptions.

Celebrity also states that special fares and MoveUp upgrades from non-suite staterooms do not receive Premium Drinks and Premium Wi-Fi (. Check and verify with the cruise line.; verify against current MoveUp terms because this carve-out can change periodically). Do not assume that moving into a higher cabin automatically recreates the fare benefits of booking that category directly.

The bid formula that actually matters

Use the same fare basis for both options: taxes, fees, promotions, gratuities, and included benefits.

Option A: guaranteed cabin

Guaranteed upgrade cost = price of the desired cabin booked directly − price of your current cabin

This gives you control over the cabin category and, subject to availability, the ability to select a location that fits your priorities.

Option B: bid path

Bid path cost = bid amount × chargeable guests + incremental gratuities + location-control penalty

The chargeable guest count is generally the first and second guest. A solo booking can still be charged the double-occupancy amount.

The “location-control penalty” is not a cruise-line fee. It is the value you place on losing control over:

  • Deck and cabin position
  • Distance from elevators, dining, nightlife, or family venues
  • Potential noise
  • View obstruction
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Proximity to traveling companions
  • Access to a specific accessible cabin layout

If any cabin in the target category works for you, that penalty may be low. If you need a specific location, it may be substantial. A bid is not a discount if it creates a cabin problem you would have paid to avoid.

A simple hypothetical

Suppose a guaranteed balcony cabin costs $800 more than your current interior cabin.

Your bid is $300 per person. Because the offer is based on double occupancy, the bid total is $600, not $300. Add a hypothetical $120 difference in gratuities, and the bid path reaches $720 before assigning any value to location risk.

The apparent saving is $80.

That may not be enough to justify losing cabin selection, accepting a possible obstruction, or separating from family members. The lower bid wins the math only if the unknown cabin is acceptable.

When bidding can make sense

A RoyalUp or MoveUp bid may be reasonable when all of the following are true:

  • You would genuinely enjoy any cabin in the offered category.
  • The bid remains within your pre-set all-in travel budget.
  • You do not need a specific cabin number or deck.
  • You can absorb higher gratuities.
  • Your original promotion already gives you the benefits you care about.
  • You are comfortable receiving loyalty credit based on the original category.
  • You are not depending on the upgraded cabin being near another reservation.
  • You understand that acceptance is binding.

This is particularly relevant for travelers who care more about space, a balcony, or suite access than exact placement.

Do not use the bid slider’s suggested range as a spending target. Set your ceiling before submitting anything. If the total exceeds that ceiling, walk away.

Accessibility and multigenerational cautions

Accessible cabins

Do not bid away from a confirmed accessible stateroom unless the cruise line confirms in writing that the possible upgraded assignment will meet your specific needs.

A higher category is not automatically accessible. You may lose:

  • Required door width
  • Roll-in shower
  • Turning clearance
  • Accessible balcony configuration
  • Space for a wheelchair or scooter
  • Proximity to elevators
  • A cabin layout that supports your equipment

Royal Caribbean’s accessibility guidance explains why the exact stateroom matters, including device storage, door widths, and cabin geometry. Review OTGG’s Royal Caribbean accessible cruising guide before treating an upgrade as harmless.

Request written confirmation from the cruise line or your accredited travel advisor stating the cabin requirements that will remain protected. Do not rely on a telephone assurance or a generic “accessible category” label.

Multigenerational and group travel

RoyalUp and MoveUp evaluate reservations individually. The lines do not guarantee that cabins traveling together will both be upgraded or remain close if multiple bids are accepted.

That creates a particular problem for:

  • Parents and children in separate cabins
  • Grandparents near caregivers
  • Groups sharing meals and transportation
  • Families needing nearby accessible and companion cabins
  • LGBTQ+ groups that intentionally booked a shared cabin cluster

If proximity matters, treat your current arrangement as the guaranteed plan. A bid should not be submitted on the assumption that the cruise line will preserve your cabin map.

Devil’s Advocate: the upgrade may be the worse value

The strongest argument against bidding is simple: you are paying for a category, not a carefully chosen cabin.

The higher category may be:

  • Under a pool deck or public walkway
  • Near an elevator, theater, nightclub, or service area
  • Far forward or aft, with more motion
  • Slightly obstructed
  • On a different deck from your companions
  • Less suitable for mobility, sensory, or medical needs

You also give up the certainty of knowing exactly what you purchased. The original fare’s promotions may remain, but the upgrade does not recreate every benefit of booking the higher category directly. Loyalty points remain tied to the original category.

A guaranteed cabin with a sensible location can beat a “cheap” upgrade that looks better only on paper.

Verify before you pay

Before submitting a RoyalUp or MoveUp offer:

  • Confirm that the invitation or eligibility is genuine and tied to your booking.
  • Record the bid amount and whether the line displays a double-occupancy total.
  • Calculate the charge for a solo booking as the double-occupancy amount.
  • Confirm which guests will be charged.
  • Review the displayed gratuity difference.
  • Compare the bid path with the current price of booking the target category directly.
  • Confirm which original promotions remain and which higher-category benefits are excluded.
  • Confirm that loyalty points remain based on the original category.
  • Decide whether an obstruction, lower deck, or noisy location would ruin the value.
  • Protect any accessible-cabin requirement with written confirmation.
  • Confirm that traveling-together or connecting-cabin placement is not guaranteed.
  • Save the applicable cancellation window, marked. Check and verify with the cruise line.
  • Submit only an amount that fits your pre-set budget.

Use the official RoyalUp or MoveUp page as the controlling program policy, then request bookingspecific written confirmation of eligibility, total charges, accessibility requirements and group-placement limitations before you submit an offer or pay.
